6ppc action question

I'm thinking of building a 6 ppc an having trouble figuring out what bolts will accept the case. Does it take a custom action and bolt or can you use a factory rig and make it work. Thanks for any help.

PPC is built off of .220 Russian brass .443" dia. Most Rem/Win/Sav/Rug. bolt faces are set up for the .470" case. They "might" extract a spent case. You could send your bolt to get it bushed and extractor changed to accept the .443 case and firing pin hole trued up , no worries. Great gunsmiths around. Check with Greg Tannel. Let us know about what you have intended for this rig.

Thanks for the info! Just plan on it being a sweet shooting varmit rig. Don't shoot competition but do like to shoot a nice shooting gun.

currdog: Pictures of a Remington 700 SA boltface that was converted from 6mm Remington size case heads (.473") to ppc, .443". Gunsmith added a sleeve for the smaller diameter case rim. The conversion was done in 1998, the receiver has seen many thousands of rounds fired, and several different barrels. Sako extractor done at the same time.

Many custom actions, like my Panda's & Bat's are available with dual use bolt faces for both .473" and .443" case's.

Great info guys! Thanks this is just what I am looking for! I was really curious how well one would hold up if it had been bushed. Really good pics! That shows some good work. Just planning on having a really nice shooting varmit rig. We don't shoot comps but like to shoot for groups for fun. Right now just trying to figure out where to start with this caliber. I have a built 2506 and of course the action was no problem so now I learning about a little more in depth set up! Thanks for the help guys!!!

So the bolt face is 220 russian/7.62-39. A REM bolt from PTG would be the cheapest way to convert a Rem action. Typically a Sako extractor installed on a closed bolt face (REM/Savage) works also. Savage you can buy a bolt head and change it yourself. SSS sells these. Most custom bolts are a close copy of a Remington. The Winchester/sliding plate style extractor is Size specific with an ejector but not without. Example a Panda action with a spring loaded extractor is size specific (ppc or br). I would think hard if I had a BR 473 bolt face in just running a BR. Unless you have a custom rig made to utilize all the benefits of a BR rifle I don't think the PPC is better. Plus BR's work well with standard powders. Varget, H4895, etc. Actions like control round feed Winchester/Mauser are size specific. Hope this helps. I agree with Webster. I think you would be going to a degree of hassle and expense to "build" a 6PPC varmint gun that won't yield any better results than just building a no turn 6BR.

unless you just want to, which is why we all build guns.
i would go straight 6br for varmint and local club match shooting.
i have 3-6brs built on savage actions different twists for different uses.
I have 1 custom 6ppc built on a trued sleeved rem.
one savage is on a full br stock 3" flat fore end. i built it before i bought the full custom 6ppc rig.
at 100 and 200yd im a pretty consistent .3moa to .5moa- 5 shot shooter with the 6br with the 6ppc im about a tenth better. My shooting being the limiting factor with both rigs. all that to say the ppc is a lot of brass work for a varmint rig. the varmint cant tell a difference.
the ppc with a common 14 twist barrel is set up for a max of 65 - 68 gr bullets that perfectly match the case powder volume . the br can be set up to shoot as heavy as a 105gr bullet much less wind drift. at distance your shooting ability will be the only thing that matters anyway.

I bought the ppc because i had to have one. but its not a magic wand im still the shooter i am ppc or not

6 BR! totally agree with the above. i shoot two and third on the way...all varmint and paper. my longest ghog instant kill is now 320 yds with a 68 gr watson bullet with a mv of 3450 fps. the bolt face issue was what made me choose the 6 BR plus the option of shooting heavier bullets...i chose a 14 tw for 60-70 gr. another nice thing about the ".308" boltface is that you can switch barrels to another cartridge from 22-250 to 6.5-284 and many in between. the ppc locks you into a very few chioces 22 ppc, 6ppc ?30 ppc. good luck.

.470 minus .443 equals a difference of .027 or .0135 per side. You mean to tell me for a varmint gun it would not work if he had a mini m16 extractor it wouldnt work?

CZ chambers the 7.62x39 Rus. same case head dia. as the 6 ppc "IF" you want a repeater/sporter style action.
