6mmBR Rem/6mmBR Norma

This is a newbie question, I have a 6mmBR Rem XP-100 that I have used factory Rem ammo in for years. I have run out and see that Laupa and Norma make factory ammo. Is it the same and will it shoot in my 6mmBR Rem?

Thanks,

The 64 dollar question is "what chamber do you have in your rifle". It is my understanding that early Remington chambers had a shorter neck than the brass has now. The brass that Remington makes is a little smaller than the Lapua brass. The only way to know is have someone make a chamber cast and see what you have. You could get a rough idea by taking a empty case that was fired in your rifle and push it into the chamber with your finger. see where the head of the case stops in relation to the end of the barrel.take a empty Lapua case and see how far you can push it into the chamber with your finger. If it looks like it goes to the same spot, try putting the bolt into the rifle and see if it will close,,no hard pressure only normal closing pressure) If it closes you don't have a short neck. This is only close so you need a chamber cast to know what you can use.If it is a short neck you could have it chambered out to a Norma chamber.
hope this helps

No, it won't chamber in your XP. Diameter dimensions of 6BR Norma are larger than the 6mmBR Rem. chamber by ~.005".

Per the Sierra reloading manual edition V "Remington finally standardized the 6mm BR in 1989, offering both loaded ammunition and factory-formed brass. It should be noted that the case standardized in 1989 was changed slightly from the original dimensions of the wildcat 6mm BR. The new case has a neck .040" longer than the original, making the maximum case length 1.560". Guns produced prior to January 1989 require the cases to be trimmed by .040" before they can be used"

I'm sitting at my computer measuring two pieces of new brass. One is a Remington case and one is a Lapua.
OAL on the Lapua is 1.554" Remington is 1.558"
Diameter above the extractor groove Lapua .468" Rem. .463"
Diameter at the shoulder Lapua .461" Rem. .457"
The Remington will chamber in a Norma chamber but Norma/Lapua will not chamber in a Remington chamber.
Remington brass is available through Midway.

Hi so do Redding make 6mmBR Norma Dies?.When I ordered mine I was supplied with 6mmBR Remington Dies.Is this ok.My rifle is chambered in,no turn -271) 6mmBR Norma.

Wow!! When I read your post I had to see what the label on my Redding dies said. Mine also said 6mmBR Remington however, when you FL size with these dies the dimensions are of the 6mmBR Lapua brass.

Hi if you want to resize a case for a Rem BR chamber Redding make a Small base die in 6mm BR and these are the correct die for the Rem Match chambers. The Saami specs for both chamber bodies are the same it is just the throat dimentions that vary but most benchrest and accuracy shooters have had the chambers cut to suit the smaler case that Remington make if they are using Remington cases. The same go's with 284 cases all the cases besides Winchester have a .500 base diameter and the Win cases are 4 thou undersize so people have had chambers cut to suit the Smaler case it does not mean the dies are incorrect but the chambers are not SAAMI specification. So the easy fix is if you have a SAAMI size BR chamber use the standard die if it is undersize use the small base die. The Lapua cases should be hard to fit into the other chambers when new and unfired so use that for a guage to see what die you require.
