6mmBR Norma vs Remington?

Looking at reloading this cartridge for the first time, I went to QuickLoad for help. There is a very distinct difference in pressure vs powder amount for these two carridges in Quickload, the Remington version having much higher pressures for the same amount of the same powder.

My question is this - What is the diference in the cartridges as they appear to be the SAME? Only think I can find is that the Remington cases have a larger flash hole.

I am sure there is a simple explanation, but I just woder what it is.

Thanks,

George

The Remington is based on Remington custom BR brass with a small flash hole.,You can't buythat URBR brass anymore to form your own and the already to load Remington I don't think is available or used by many any more. The neck is shorter than the Norma and the case is not as strong with less capacity than the Norma or Lapua offering. The Lapua being the strongest of the three being thicker. Can you use the Lapua brass in a chamber cut for the Remington? Probably not, even if you trim the Lapua necks back to the Remington specifications.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT! let a smith talk you into using a 6BR Remington reamer if he has one. The only way to go is to have the barrel chambered for 6BR Norma so you can use the great Lapua brass with it's longer 1.560 OAL.
I hope this helps.

George,

Like Danny said 6BR Norma only. The Lapua brass is what makes the 6BR so great.

I did not see the difference in neck lengths when I plugged in the loading data to QuickLoad. Thanks.

I have 400 unfired primed R-P cases stamped 6mmBR Remington,I bought years ago at a estate sale) but the necks mike long enough to trim to the 6mmBR Norma/Lapua case length. But they do have larger flash holes. Apparently the fellow had a TC Contender as the 100 fired cases he had had been trimmed to the shorter 6mmBR Remington length.

They are still available through some retailers.

Thanks again for the answers. Now I am ready to test the new shooter with correct loading knowledg.

Hi - I'm a newcomer, and a former .222 benchrest shooter, from 30 yrs. ago) looking into a 6mm BR rifle for the same, probably out to 600 yrds, and need advice. I have a tendency towards the custom Remington 40-XB since I've used their .222 Model 700s in the past and liked them.

Looks like Lapua brass is favored, and the rifle has to be chambered specifically for it. Is Lapua and Norma brass interchangeable, or you have to chamber for one or the other? Is anything wrong with the 6BR Remington brass, less accurate)? I have no idea if the custom shop at Remington would balk at chambering for Lapua/Norma over their own, but I can ask. Looks like I'd also want a 1:8 twist and barrel length 26" - 28". This is far more technical since my .222 days, so any advice on specs to ask for would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

Catshooter, thanks for making history fun and interesting! You are a riot man.

CatShooter - Thanks for that fantastic explanation! Now makes sense. On the 40XB what barrel twist and length did you end up with?

Thanks much! I'm going to check with Remington to see what they'll do. I'm uneasy about building my own,or choosing parts to have one assembled by a gunsmith)due to lack of experience. I'm assuming that Remington should have the capability of putting together a BR quality rifle, but don't know - that doesn't look like their primary focus. If you have any insight on that, let me know. I never had any issues with their .222 BR rifles way back when. I realize that a large part of the work for accuracy depends on finding the right cartridge components where the rifle shoots its best since no two are alike.

Jon222 There are a great number of excellant BR 'smiths listed as part of this Forum and on Benchrest Central, http://www.benchrest.com/ ). I would recommend you contact one of them and tell them what you want and what you plan on doing with your gun and let them build you a gun.

Remington is OK, but you will get a MUCH BETTER gun by having one of the 'smiths build you one. You might even post a request on the Forum with you location to find a 'smith in you area that you can go visit.

George & Catshooter - Thanks again for the advice! BR has evolved into something highly technical in the past few decades to the extent where,as you have said) you really have to decide exactly what kind of shooting you want to do. I actually want to do both BR and varmiting like I've done with the .222s, but don't want to spend over $2500 on the 6mmBR rifle. That's not going to be competitive with the high end custom BR rifles and their supposed performance. So anyway, I may start out with something less expensive, and decide later if I want to go higher end.

Catshooter,
I haven't found BR people to be as you have found them. I don't shoot cats either. You can buy what you call a full blown BR rifle for $1250-$2000. Check my Adv. on this forum. You won't find a finer rifle with better equip. for that price. You can also put a BR barrel on it and rebate the rims and shoot 22BR, 6BR, 6.5BR, 25BR, and 30BR with the same rifle, just switch barrels. I have several hundred pieces of new Remington brass with no flash holes that you can drill yourself to the size that you prefer.

What is your agenda? Why would you pay the money for the 40XXXBRX or whatever when you can buy a clean used custom for that money? You would be better off buying a 700 and spending the money to make it like you want. I don't care if he or anybody else isn't interested in my rifle, it is just an example of what's out there. Why would you object to a custom at a reasonable price?
Butch

I guess you have been out of the shooting world for awhile. We have been rebating the BR rims since the BR was introduced. If you would be so kind as to send me an email address, I will send you photos. You need to check your facts first. What do you consider to be a good rifle? I will be at my home computer after 4pm and can send the photos.

CatShooter, while you were shooting with Jim Walker, I was shooting with Mike Carmichael.
Rebating the rims of BR cases is a perfectly acceptable way to use a PPC boltface to shoot them. Thus, you don't need a new bolt or rifle. It would have no effect at all on the value of the rifle. For someone who dislikes people "coming out of the woodwork with their used stuff", you sure are concerned about value. Used BR rifles can be picked up for $1200.00 and up. Many of them are very competitive.
A lot has changed in BR since you and Jim shot together.

Butch...that is Mike Carmichael with Field and Stream..!!!??!!and I heard "Butch" was on your birth certificate...Roger

Yeah... I remember the "rebated 219 Wasp" - it was a winner too.

The 219 Wasp, with the 'o6 rim, WAS a winner. A big winner. In the hands of shooters like Henry Donaldson it took home a lot of fake-wood trophies until Jimmy Walker and Walter Page brought out their 222.

cat, cat, cat, cat, cat. C'mon fella. Lighten up.

Hey cat, don't jump on me. I was just trying to lighten things up.

If you go back to your early posts, it was you who went on and on with that Benchrest history lesson, which was largely incorrect BTW) and other assorted rants. The others were simply trying to point out that there were other ways to skin that cat,pun intended). Then, off you went on another tangent.

Wanna try explaining over-bore capacity again? ,Again, I'M KIDDING!!)
