6mmbr help

I am a newby. I want to bench rest shoot, I have only the desire. I need rifle, scope and all related equipment. My thought is savage model 12f and knightforce 12x42 benchrest. Any help will be appreciated. thanks, powderboy

I believe Savage is probably one of the better rifles on the market being a production rifle. Remingtons are all but junk anymore, and I wont waste my time on them unless they are like a pre 1995. So the savage is trying the benchrest market by marketing the model 12F which is a great rifle. But if comp shooting you should be looking at more of a custom build. Not to take anything from the savage, but if you want to compete with the big dogs, you must eat their food.LOL.
The nightforce you cant go wrong with. The benchrest models are nice, but I prefer the NXS with the side focus. Again, it will set you back a few more bucks though. Benchrest shooting, expecially competition, is not a cheap sport...

Powderboy,
Age is a wonderful thing, isn't it? I'm about 6 years behind you and my eyes aren't what they used to be when I was 30. I got bit by the Benchrest thing a couple of years ago and opted for the Savage Model 12 Benchrest Rifle in 6mm. Because of my eyesight, I'm using a Weaver T-36X scope so I can see the standard Benchrest style targets. Out of the box, that baby shoots frankly better than I do anymore and she puts together 5 shots groups at 100 yds that can be covered with a dime. Just gotta find the right bullet and load and if you get one, pm me and I'll send over some suggested loads that I've found work nicely in mine. For the money and compared to what you get, you cannot beat that rifle. I shoot strictly Benchrest anymore and that rifle makes me look good. Hollar if I can assist you in anyway. And BTW, I shoot strictly for self entertainment and fun, no competitions anymore, except for Rimfire Benchrest events that I'm not doing nearly as much as before.

Several good used custom rifles out there to be had for a decent price. You won't go wrong that way if you don't mind paying a little more. Find a ppc and 5 shots will be in one hole.

To start, what do you consider "bench rest shoot?" I am guessing that would would like to do some casual shooting from a bench off of a rest, and that your not looking to get into any benchrest competitions. Is this right?

I am assuming that your wanting to do some casual shooting from a bench or maybe shoot a few club match's, with that said, Model 12fv would be a poor choice if your wanting to get into bench rest shooting. The nightforce scope are super nice, but I would spend a bit more money on the rifle and a bit less on the scope. You could get a Weaver t 36 or sightron 36 for around $400, and have a good scope, and place the rest of the money on a better gun.

The reason I say the 12FV is a poor choice, is that the stock is, well to put it nicely, its not worth a crap. Spend a bit more money on the rifle and get something with a better stock. I would recamend a "model 12 VLP" as a base model gun to shoot benchrest with. I would say a upgrade from that model would be the "Model 12 LRPV", and top of the benchrest game would be the "model 12 long range benchrest."

I, too, have the savage 12 long range benchrest in 6BR. That thing is amasing! I bought mine on a whim,,picked up a cheapy Caldwell rest and rear bag, a used weaver 36T, some used dies,,when went shooting. At short ranges,(100 & 200),it keeps up with the PPCs. At 300 & 600 it keeps up with custom guns. I am right behind you in age,,it aint too late to get into the 'action'.
good luck!
