6mm Super Lr/ super x loads

Heavies, It a kreiger 1in8 that run 3200 it shoots good right about 3190. With the v100 it ran over 3300 with no signs of pressure but is most accurate right at or just below 3200. Im going to use a 1 in 7.5 bartlein barrel.

I messed with Lapua brass for a couple of years and finally got tired of turning necks EVERY time I fired a case. It would create a donut from the thick shoulder flowing forward even when i cut into the shoulder a little. I may have been doing something wrong but wheni switched to Winchester brass the problem went away. Nothing wrong with that Winchester 243 brass, it shoots just fine and is alot cheaper. I have another barrel chambered up and this one will see ONLY Winchester brass. Work up a good load and go shoot, no more turning necks. Had enough of that. Im not shooting benchrest with the thing for heavens sakes.

Russ, I just tried form some new WW brass into SLR and the body caved in, it never got down to size. I cut one open and the body wall thickness is thinner than the neck. Tried Lapua and it formed perfect. So i dug out some old WW brass and it form perfect,cut it open and it's almost half again as thick as the new stuff and the same thickness as the Lapua body..........jim

I haven't seen any Nosler brass but everyone I talk to has said it is top quality brass, I just wonder if it's worth trying in the SLR?

For the Lapua brass wouldn't turning the necks down before sizing eliminate the problem of brass flowing? I can only imagine your nightmare of having to neck turn after every fire!

Any one shot any 107's in a 7.5 twist bartlein? I will be shooting more of them than the 115's and want to make sure that I don't need to just get a 1in 8.
 
Currently I am shooting 108gr Bergers in my 1-8 twist Bartlein barrel and getting the same results Bob just mentioned. Definately my best bullet tried so far.
 
I'll cut some open and get some numbers.The body caves in behind the shoulder, they may blow the wrinkles out when fired. I'm looking in an other direction now........jim
 
I never had the body cave in with any brass (many different lots of Winchester brass, Remington brass, Frontier brass, etc.). I guess I am wondering what type of lube you are using to re-form the shoulder and whether that has something to do with what you are experiencing. The best lube I have found for re-forming 243 Win brass to the 6mm Super LR is Hornady One Shot spray lube. Once in a while there is a slight (and I mean slight) variation right behind the shoulder (not a "cave in" by any means) and that typically permanently blows out on the first firing.

Guys,I use imperial wax,OK hear goes i never got close to the size before it caved in so i cut some apart. This is at the body right behind the shoulder,.0126 .0122 .0120 .0125 and the neck.0160 .0155 .0144 .0152. You can run your own test but i can not use this stuff. The Lapua is running at the body.0167 .0168 .0168 .0165, i can control the shoulder neck area by cutting in to it when i neck turn.......jim
 
Reminds me of some Win .22-250 loaded rounds I bought 2 years ago. Neck sizing the brass after the first firing pushed the neck down into the shoulder. That batch of brass was unusually thin at the neck/shoulder junction. Never had that problem before or after with any cartridge. Guess every manufacturer has a klinker batch now and then.

The current batch of Win .243 that I have is forming normally when I push the shoulder down with a 6XC body die to form 6SLR, no caving in.
 
Just shootn in the dark here; but if it isn't the brass, could it possibly something stuck in the die, or an imperfect die. Does it happen on each and every piece in the same place? Again, just a stab in the dark!

It's the WW brass, lubed a Lapua,sized right down to size. Dug around and found old WW brass fired many times sized right down perfect..........jim
 
I've sized a little over 400 pcs of WW brass for the SLR , rub on a film of Imperial sizing wax (top half only), Redding bushing die, and , yes, I have seen 1 or 2 in every batch that show slight buckling under the shoulder. I just assumed pulling that much more neck out of the shoulder , and changing the shoulder angle , and doing it to virgin brass that is a little softer , that this was not totally unexpected. Fired brass would tend to be a little harder , and may not experience this issue. The brass with the buckling, chambers fine , shoots fine and is well fireformed after. ???

Keith, I can't use the bushing die to size, because of the almost .002 neck thickness variation. I turn the necks so a fl. die the first time. i really don't see the bushing die making a difference. When the case wall is that thin it has to happen. The neck shoulder area is almost a 1/3 thicker.....jim
 
I would have to agree that the culprit is the brass.

New WW brass and some older WW and REM brass sized right down on the first pass and then shot very well.

Imperial sizing die wax was what I used also.

what I had been doing , was initial sizing with a bushing a couple thou. larger than my final size bushing , running all the brass tru a mandrel die for my neck turning , then skimming the neck just to even them up a little, taking off the high spots. Now , I may see some pcs. trim more than others , but I'm not seeing a lot of variation in my neck wall thichness -.001" - .0015".
