6mm Super L R

Finished breaking in my 6mm super lr and tried her out to day. I started out with 43.5 of 4831sc and federal 210 m match primers. The twist rate is 1.7.5 and the bullets are 115 vlt Berger.300 yds was the range and it was not very good 2.6 inches and the velosity was 2790.I seen where some are getting good results with 44.5 of 4831sc so i load 3 of these and it moves up to 2825 and 1.5 inches. From what i read i need to be 3000 to 3050. There are no pressure issues so i though i need to ask before i go higher. i am 8 thou off the lands the barrel is 25 inches long.

My bbl is 30 inch long. I jam my 115 DTACs .030" into the lands. With 43.5 gr of H4831sc and Winchester brass, Wolf primers = 2980 fps.

Accuracy is excellent. Three tenths at 100 yds.

Bob

I started out at 300 yds because when i was breaking it in i used the one shot at a time to get it on the paper. I was just concerned about the low velocity. I am going to go up on powder and go closer to the lands to day.The accuracy is not the best but just getting started at 300 it was 1.5 inch. One other question i have is trying a mag primer with this set up and being safe?

If you don't like the results you get with the 4831 my gun really shines with RL-22, 44.3gr with a 108BIB I get in the 3140's with a little more room to go and superb accuracy.

This is with a 28" Broughton 5c 8" twist

LR, first off I don't shoot a SLR, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night. ::) Just kidding, your velocity does seem low for your charge weight even with the 25" barrel. I have shot LR primers and LRM primers in all most every cartridge I have and have been ok. I do not push any of my loads to the max, I would think that you would be fine in using a magnum primer. You could always reduce the load and work up.

Well, I shoot a 6SLR and did stay at a Holiday In Express lately...OP didn't say how many rounds/contour on your new barrel. My latest 30" Broughton took almost 100 rounds for it to "settle" in with a gain of approx. 40'/sec. Usually doesn't take that long IMO. Switched to 115 dtac's from my usual load of 107smk's. The load is almost a copy of Bob's, just not jammed as far and has shot fantastic. All @ 600, good x-count w/ 200's & 199's. H1000 works great too, just a wee bit slower. Eric in DL

Cakes, that was my thinking exactly, just did not type it. Glad you came along. What's your take on the primer? I don't think it's needed.

The conture of the barrell is 1.250 down to .875 I have shot 77 rounds thru it.I was going to shoot a few rounds to day but we have a mud hole down at my range.I was reading the aritcle on 6s lr web site and i just though it was funny i have the same set up made by the same man and the first time he fires his he wins a 600 then a 1000 yard match and his vis was 3050 and mine 2800 with same load and bullet.

who are some smiths re-barreling rifles into the 6 slr?

I am interested in looking into one of these with intentions to use it for coyotes,

not sure if that is the best route to take, but I am intrigued about what it might offer over a regular 243, if anything.

Have you checked your chrono for accuracy. By that I mean to fire some factory ammo (even 22 rf) to confirm that it is reading in the correct ball park.

I have had an error in my screen spacing that grossly affected my velocity reading.

Just a thought.

Bear in mind, sometimes there can be significant burn rate differences with the "same" powder depending on the lot #. Years ago I had some H4831SC that it took about 53.5 gr to get 2900 fps out of 6.5x284 with the 142 Sierras, a later lot got me around 2950 fps with only 51.5 gr. Some lots of powder just don't seem to have "the right stuff" and some do. Some barrels run slow and some run fast. I have a 6 SLR Bartlein that is easily 100 fps faster than a Broughton I have with the same chamber cut with the same reamer and with the same loads - not something you can control - has nothing to do with the particular cartridge you are shooting - luck of the draw - it happens - but a Schneider barrel I have that runs slow shoots fine with an additional 2 grains of powder that gets it up to the speed of the Bartlein.

Looks like Preacher on here can chamber one for you; or pm Nomad 47 maybe...
I've been looking at the SLR as an alternative to the .243 in more of a walking/hunting configuration, too; maybe with a 24" barrel. At the very least it would be less of a barrel burner than the .243. Am also wondering if anyone's gotten the 6 SLR to feed through a magazine.

Bob that was my next undertakeing. I am going to check my Chroni before i do any thing else. As for the yotes that is the reason i had this gun made for long range coyote.I have a wonderful custom 22-250 ackley that i use to shoot 300 yard crows for practice When you get out past 300yd on big 60 70 pd yotes you take a chance of some running off.I shot a big yote at 350 yds and hit it right in the shoulder with a 55 grain nosler bt,nice blood trail, blood where he layed down. I trailed him for two hr with my Jack Russel. That is when i ordered my 6lr. I go every year to Alberta to yote hunt and you get some nice long shots plus a 250 is not enough for wolves.Back to the wounded yote. I hunt on a rather large farm and if you call to much they get wise. When i feel like we need to take a few out i set the snares for the farmer. You guessed it i caught the 65 pd yote in the snare. He had a nice hole about a inch and half deep right on the shoulder and it was starting to heal! That is why i am going to get this 6slr going

As far as using a mag primer, ive shot about 10 of them in the 6slr just to see the difference. From a standard fed 210 match to a fed 215 mag match it was equivilent to 1 grn of powder charge extra.

Id say work your powder load up un half grain increments and figure out you max charge before you start getting pressure signs then go back and work your load for accuracy.

6 SLR feeds perfectly through any of the box or other magazines that will feed a 308 Win/243 Win. We have done a lot of AR-10's and LR-308's in 6SLR - - also feeds well through the Accuracy International Mags, Alpha mags, straight up Rem BDL or ADL internal boxes, etc.
etc.

maybe something like a light varmint contour about 24" (heavier than a regular sporter, but lighter than a sendaro contour) parked in a HS precision varmint stock maybe set up to shoot bullets in the 75 to 95 grain range for coyotes?

does this make any sense?

Agree with xdeano. I see .5 to 1 grain adjustment needed when switching between magnum and regular primers.

Yes, Preacher has the reamer and can do a great chambering job.

Lee, if you have a 243 repeater, you can load your magazine with my ammo to see if they feed.

LR Coyote,

I'm just curious if you'd ever think about going with the 105grn Berger Hybrid? They've got the same BC as the 115 Bergers but what you give up in weight, you'll gain in velocity. Just a thought.

I shoot a few coyotes a year with the 105's at a variety of ranges and i'll tell you they do a great job at putting the lights out.

Well the mud went away and i had to see what i can do to get this 6 slr going. I checked the chrony with some ellie 22s and they were 1071. My first shot 1070 so i beleive all is well with the chrony.I loaded 3 with 44.5 and 3 with 45 grains 0f 4831 sc and moved them both in to 1 thou of the lands. My first three were average 2860 and a 1.25 inch group at 300. the next with a half grain more picked it up to 2907 and brought the group down to 1.10 at 300.I don't see any pressure but the next move is 45and a half then 46???Deano i am just starting to try things this is new to me and if i can't get to 3000 then i will try droping down to the 105 are 108.What are the first signs of pressure on 6slr at these levels?Going back to shoot 6 more tomorrow. Thanks for all the feed back.

you'll have shinny ejector marks or swipes, as well as flattening primers. it's crazy how much you can push this little guy to make it move.

I'm just busting your balls on the 105's. It sounds like those 115's are starting to shoot a little better for you.
