6mm shilen select match???

I ordered a shilen slect match 6mm 8twist barrel and it came in last week. Well I inspected it and it looked fine so I cut 1/2" off both ends and chucked it up in our lathe & "what the He!!" was the first thing I could think to say. I THOUGHT shilen checked EVERY select match barrel that left there place, but they didnt check this one. The bore wasnt in the center of the barrel, and if it was really close, I would turn the outside profile down so the bore would be in the center, but I would have to take off WAYYY to much to make this barrel right. I called Brownells and they said return it and they will ship me another one. I really dont think I want another one now. This isnt the first one or the second I have had to send back. This will be my last shilen barrel, I have used them in the past and for the most part, they were ok. I have never had to return a Kreiger or bartlien barrel. Come on Shilen, a little better quality control goes a long way.

Very few barrels, even from the best custom makers have their bore end up deadcenter at the muzzle. Cutting the OD to fix this is the worst thing to do.
If you look close enough the bore usually isn't straight either.
Yet, BR comps are won with "defective" barrels like yours.

If you can see it with the naked eye it is too far off.
Like the man said some barrels are way off but still shoot./
The two other makers of button rifled barrels HART and LILJA
Usually are way better centered. If you check closely you will find that Hart Barrels have some of the starightest Holes around.
Dial it in in the headstock and you will see the differance.

Shilen recomends cutting of at least 1" off muzzle end . Also they only ensure that runout from end to end is within .035. I believe that is what they told me when i questioned them on that first select i installed many years ago. I was concerred that it would not shoot . I put 6 plaques on the wall with that bent shilen in 600yd IBS bench . However call them up and they will surely work with you . T.R.
