6mm Remington

Does anybody still use the old 6mm Remington? I just picked one up and was looking for some loads to start with. Whats your opinion on them? Thanks

I've been using one since 1974. Dang that's a long time... Still use one - think it's a great dual-purpose varmint/deer cartridge. I got my best accuracy with a 95 grain Nosler ballistic tip loaded over a max charge of Re-22.

Pleasant to shoot. Accurate. Easy to load. Lethal on varmints, predators and mule deer. There's a lot to like!

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about picking up some H414 for some 87grn VMaxs. I haven't started loading yet...maybe this weekend. I've always loved the old 6mm, I've had pretty good luck with it. Thanks again

Ammohouse, your 6mm could very well be the 1-12 twist rifle. If it is the 87 grainers hsould do just fine. If it is the 1-9 twist rifles, heavier bullets can be used. This rifle is a very accurate round, and little credit was given to it because it was created initally with the 1-12 twist and was completely overshadowed with the 243 Winchester. Check your rate of twist and good shooting.:):)

It's a newer VLS so its gotta be the 1:9 twist. I got it used and the guy hasn't had it long...6 months. He gave me his handloads which are 87 VMaxs and they shoot great. How light of bullets will shoot good through it? I've heard that it should shoot all the heavy bullets just fine. Thanks

The 6mm Remington is a fine old all around shooter, and the 1 in 9 twist will let you use most all the bullets that are available for it.
One of mine is a Ackley, with a 1 in 10 twist and it likes the 80 grain Fowler flat base over a lot of H-4350, and it also shoots the 95 grain BT very well on deer sized critters.... It never liked the 87 grain V-Max, but the weights were all over the place when I weighed them.
I need to try the 105 A-Max as soon as the weather allows it around here..

I have a 6mm rem. 1-10 twist barrel that loves the 70 grain SMK's. I have tried the 87 grain vmax, 75 grain vmax, all out to 300 yards so far but it likes the 70 grain SMK the best. 45.5 grains of H-414 is what I have found the most accurate so far. I built the gun for coyotes ande varmints.

A question for you guys that have Ackleyized your 6mm remingtons; I get 3800 fps with the 70 grain SMK over 48.5 grains of H-414 with absolutely no pressure signs, and still good accuracy,1/2" 5 shot groups) When I first got this gun I was thinking AI, but with the speed I am getting with the factory case I don't think I would mess with it now. With my accuracy load I average 3680 FPS,45.5 grains H-414, 70 grain SMK)with the lowest ES out of any load I have shot through the gun. This load shoots in the .3's when I do my part. I would think that I would not gain much going AI, and I don't want to risk messing with it now. what do you think?

Sounds like you have your gun shooting good, I wouldn't mess with it. It does make you wonder what you would gain by AI it, is it worth it? I think I'll just play with mine until I get bored shooting small groups:D

I have a 40x Rem Rangemaster in 6mm 1X12 twist. I have just over 1800 rounds through it. The last 1700 have been Berger 71gr BT Moly with IMR 3031. The velocity is about 3300 FPS. The gun consistently shoots .3 five shoot groups. I'm using this as my Moly experimental gun and have been checking the throat and bore with a bore scope every 200 rounds. Not sure I know what to look for but the bore is in excellent shape but the throat is starting to show its age but as long as it keeps shooting in the threes I'm not going to monkey with the load. 6mm makes a great prairie dog gun if you get its weight up around 12-13 pounds.

I'm not sure of the weight of the gun. Its a stock VLS and it has a break on the barrel. I did notice that the break basically is holes drilled in the barrel. Everybody says thats bad but the gun shoots great. Any opinions?

Have somehow accumulated several 6mm Remingtons.

Have a Sako with a 30-inch long, 8-inch twist Pac-Nor match barrel.

Have a Remington with a similar Shilen barrel.

Have three Remington 788 in 6mm.

Have another Remington 700 BDL Varmint that is factory original.

Have a Savage varmint rifle rebarreled to 6mm.

Don't know how these accumulate.

There is no explanation for it.

Use them for varmints.

Seem to work on prairie dogs OK.

Shot one for ground hogs from 1969-2009. Shot a lot of 4831 and 4350 with 85 gr Sierra BTHP. It's a barrel burner. You probably have a couple inches of rifling missing.

I have been shooting one for coyotes and deer since 1980. I have had good luck with 85 gr soft point bullets, with IMR3031, with velocity at about 3000 fps. I haven’t tried any of the new vmax bullets. If yours has the trigger that you have to place the safety on fire to run the bolt, consider replacing or be very careful. I believe REM paid out law suits for discharges. The old triggers are nice, but since the gun will be passed down to grandkids, I replaced mine with a Timney so the safety can remain on while running the bolt.

A gunsmith can cut the tab off that lock in less than a minute

Have a custom Ruger #1 in 6mm Rem. set for 105 gr. Hornadys. It is my long range gun. Got a seven inch 5 shot group at a thousand yards. Also shot a prairie dog sized popper at the same distance. Danced all around close to it till I finally connected on the seventh round. My load is 43.9grs. of N160 for 2911 fps.

Fun when a 17 year old thread comes back to haunt us. And the 6mm Remington is still a fine cartridge, as well as pretty versatile.

Owned several Rem 700 for deer hunting. I am left handed and if I slung the rifle over my left shoulder my body would always push the safety to the fire position and I had no way to know if the safety was on. Been a long time I think I started carrying the rifle with an empty chamber.
