6mm remington question

RE: H4831 did not provide low chrony readings nor was it accurate. (it wasn't Short Cut if that makes a difference)
Regardless, I see the NOSLER manual lists IMR4831 as the most accurate powder with 85/90 gr. bullets.

RL22 has provided best results todate with no tinkering.

I have a 6mm AI, 40X action, heavy laminated stock, built by Richard Franklin. I use 7X57 Norma brass, necked down, not turned. Using H1414 and 75 gr. V-Max bullets I've shot two 5 shot groups at .256 and two groups at .156. I use Redding dies, very little run out. I use it for gophers, haven't got to the prairie dog country with it yet. I've used some Win and Rem brass, but the Norma, in my opinion is much better. I also use a 204R, .223 and 25-06. I use 85 gr. bullets in the 25, it's a 'heavy' sporter but kicks too much for a lot of gopher shooting, I had it built well over 50 years ago, it still shoots well, at 78 I don't deal with recoil like I used to. Got a gopher (ground squirrel) at 508 yards in the Montana wind.

Since no one looked at the drawings for both cartridges, I will add that both cartridges are designed to be accommodated in short actions by length according to SAAMI. These designs obviously predate the excessive rush to accommodate the significantly longer and heavier VLD and Hybrid VLD bullets designed by a couple of bullet manufacturers.

The 7x57 Mauser length in SAAMI is also shorter than the original length as loaded by Mauser (3.071"). Some have even advocated for the 8x57 Mauser length of 3.228" CIP. Now of course, these dimensions hold very little sway over any shooter who believes that they have a better throat and freebore design than the original planner, Paul Mauser. They simply assemble a dummy cartridge which suits them and send it off to a reamer maker for grinding.

Originally the reality was that the M98 Mausers were an intermediate length action built to contain and feed both the 7mm and 8mm Mauser cartridges. Then later the U.S.introduced the .30-06 Springfield and once again the world shifted to accommodate that cartridge family. Many original Mausers magazines were swaged or machined to hold the longer 3.340" cartridges. But, as pendulums are want to do, it has come back around.

Borden and Defiance have both produced a standard intermediate length action for this type of cartridge. From Jim's website:

Borden Ridgeline Action

Borden Ridgeline actions are a hybrid Remington 700 footprint. This model is intended for mid length cartridges such as the 6.5×284 Win, 257 Roberts, 6MM Remington, 300 WSM, 7 WSM, 270 WSM and the RSAUM family of cartridges.

Getting the right fit in an action for mid length cartridges has been a challenge for years. Many cartridges like the 257 Roberts, 6.5×55 Mauser, 6MM Remington, 284 Win, 6.5×284 Win and the WSM and RSAUM cartridges have been put in the standard short action which restricts overall length of the cartridge and effects its efficiency. Those same cartridges when done in standard long action result in excess space in the magazine well. For that reason we have introduced the Ridgeline series of actions which feature an opening of 3.2 inches in the magazine box. McMillan is inletting stock patterns that accept either Short or Long Remington actions for the Borden Ridgeline.

The Ridgeline is offered as repeater or Single shot and can be bought as a Titanium version as well (21.44 ounces with pinned SS lug). We have “Standard” mag boxes as well as WSM/RSAUM mag boxes available for them. Also, the Obendorf style drop floorplate trigger guard systems are also available.

Similarly, Defiance has released a design for the intermediate length cartridges except without the availability of Titanium. Stocks can be arranged through McMillan when ordering. So now, instead of being forced to run a long action for intermediate length cartridges you can match the action length to the cartridge. ;):)
