6mm Remington Load

I have just got into reloading and am trying to get something going for my 6mm Remington. I have a Remington model 600 which I believe is a 1 in 9 twist. I am trying to push a 95 gr Hornady SST with Varget and CCI BR2 primers. Right now the smallest group I have gotten is around two inches and they have a big spread. Shooting factory Hornady loaded rounds with the same bullet I am at about a .60 five shot group at 100 yards. According to my Lee reloading manual I can go up to 37 grains of Varget right now I am at 35.5 grains. Anyone have a good load?

You need to up that Varget charge to close those groups up.
H-4350 is a great powder in the 6mm Remington with heavy bullets.

Always go up .5 grns at a time.
I'm still playing with loads for mine.
I'm trying 42.5grn of 414 and 87grn vmax
Anybody else have some pet loads?
Hopefully someday there will be a 6mm Remington info page on the homepage.

First of all, 42.5 gr H414 with an 87 gr VMAX in a 6mm Rem is a rather light load. I have been up to 45 gr with a .243. You should be able to approach 46.5 gr. I'm not sure, but 46 may be your max because 45 gr was too hot. I ended up with 44.5 as my max load, but none of them were very accurate.

May want to try H4350.

They guy I got the rifle from said that was his load. It shoots pretty good but I'm still working with it. I don't care about speed, I want it to be accurate. My 10yr can shoot it no problem. I haven't had the gun that long and range time has been scarce. Thanks for your info. I've been loading some going up .5 grns at a time, I'll try to go up a little higher. I'll post results when I can, thanks again.

Javageek - try closing in on the max load with Varget.

Also try a slower burning powder, like Reloader 22, or H4350.

Also try Nosler's 95 grain ballistic tip bullets.

I've been shooting the little 6mm Rem since 1974. The most accurate combo in my rifle was:

Winchester brass
Federal 210 primers
Reloader 22,max load)
Nosler 95 grain Ballistic Tip bullets

From a 22" factory sporter barrel I usually get three-shot groups in the 5/8" - 3/4" area. Gets the job done on mule deer just fine too!

*Edited to add other deer-weight bullets that have done real well in the accuracy department: Speer 105 SP, Sierra 100 gr SPBT, 100 gr Nosler solid base.

Regards, Guy

The two powders I have on hand are Varget and H4895. Looking through the Lee manual for H4895 I see a 90gr and a 100gr load, no 95gr. I loaded some up with the Varget at 36gr hopefully they close up into tight groups. Is there anyway to find out what the factory loads there rounds with?

I prefer not to recommend loads not knowing how your gun is set up. But I can say from my experience 4350 and 4831 work fine. I don't use most of the new powders. I use CCI Magnum primers but WLR and Rem 9 1/2 primers work well too.
Put a wind flag out there and shoot when things look the same. You can make a simple wind flag by driving a stick in the ground and tie some flagging on it, matter fact put 2 out there. Let us know if things get better for you.

36 gr seems to have done it. I went out to the range on my lunch break today and shot a couple groups. The first group of three on a cold barrel was right at 1". The second group of three was about .40". I was in a rush so wasn't able to shoot more than that but Saturday I will go out and try a couple more groups to make sure.

So right now my load is Hornady SST 95 gr with 36 gr Varget and CCI BR2 primers.

I've loaded 43grn, 43.5grn, 44grn, and 44.5grn....and haven't made it to the range yet! Damn Air Force seems like a full time job sometimes! :) These are all on 87grn VMAX.
I've also loaded some 58grn VMAX, but like I said....I can't get any range time.

Javageek - when I was looking for a mild shooting 6mm deer load for my youngest son to start out with, I settled on 35 gr of Varget and the 95 grain ballistic tip. It worked out great! He nailed his first mulie doe at about 275 yards. Bullet performed superbly, taking a chunk out of the heart, tearing up a lung and breaking the off-side leg on exit. She collapsed instantly!

Now he's a little bigger, a couple of years older, a lot stronger and a more accomplished rifle shot. We're back to loading full strength ammo for our 6mm Remington, but it was nice to see how well the reduced power load worked in the field.

I shot a box car of antelope with a 95g partition and 42.0g of IMR 4350, Win case, 9 1/2 bullet seated off the lands .035.

Good luck!
