6MM Remington Brass

I have inhareted 300 6mm remington brass and 4 boxes of loaded shells,NOW that gives me a good reason to think about a new varmint rifle,I have seen that the 1 to 9 twist is great on the 6mm,but I have checked around and I havent seen any one that sells a new rifle in 6mm an I guess not looking in the right place . I thought that I knew all about varmint rifles but I guess I have a lot to learn. Someone let me know about this 6mm or 244 remington. Jerry

Like the .243 Winchester, the 6mm Remington is a fine multi-purpose cartridge. I've been using one since 1974 for varmints, coyotes and mule deer. It's never come up short. These days my youngest son shoots it most often.

The factory rifles handle a 95 to 105 grain bullet nicely, which is great for deer out to 300 yards in my experience. Actually, I've used the 95-105 grain bullets for coyotes and varmints with no complaints either.

For more explosive performance on small varmints, I've long-since settled on the various 75 grain hollow points, Sierra is a particular favorite as it is quite accurate.

Never had much luck with the 55 grain varmint bullets for accuracy from my rifle. I've heard good reports from others though. There is no problem reaching 3900 - 4000 fps with those little bullets though and seemingly no recoil.

My rifle is a little ol' Rem 700 BDL with a 22" sporter barrel and a 3.5-10x Leupold. Good all-around setup. I think the cartridge would really shine loaded long, and set up with a varmint barrel of at least 24 inches. One of the Rem 700 VLS models would be super - or pick up a cheap used Rem 700 and have it re-barreled...

Regards, Guy

You could always sale the loaded ammo and get you a 257 Roberts rifle and neck up the 6mm Remington cases to 257 Roberts. I just love .257 caliber rifles.

If you don't find one for sale, you can always have one built that will undoubtedly shoot lots better.....

Jerry, If in your travels you find a 722 in 244 that is nice and has a good bore I would grab it if I were you. I managed to find one at a local store. It was full length bedded which worried me at first. I bought it, cleaned it up and it shoots 1/2 +- groups as long as I stick with 85 gr,87) or lighter bullets. Mine shoots Sierra 60 gr hollow points quite well and also likes the V-Max bullets. As long as you don't get the barrel hot it shoots quite well. As far as I know all 244's had 1:12 twist and the 700's had 1:10 or 1:9 twist depending on their age. We have discussed this on many other posts on this forum. The 6mm is quite a varmint caliber. Take a look at the Hodgdon data. 60 gr bullet at 3800+ fps. Good luck in your quest, Peter.
