6mm rem or 25-06 ?

Been wanting to do another build down the road just because i want to. Really like to play w the 6mm rem but brass always seems to be iffy! Figuring the 6mm wld be better served in a long action, it wld be easier to just do the -06 anyways. Like to get and old adl or bdl in good shape and rebarrel w a wilson #4. Strictly just a simple short range hunting gun. Just playing. Just seems like 6mm rem gets no love. What do you guys think?

I like the 6mm Remington and I have killed a lot of short range deer with it. I've also killed 4 or 5 with a 25-06 and it is deadly, very deadly. So my vote would be for a 25-06 Improved. Not for any extra velocity, but Improved cartridges don't seem to require as much case trimming and seem to have better case life with good brass.

The 25-06 will give you heavier bullet weights and better performance on game.
However I have a soft spot for the 6mm Remington. It can be used nicely in a SA with a Wyatts box for the heavier 100-115 class bullets .

Get a Short action, Rem 700 and Go with, a 6 XC , VERSION One ( Tubb chamber, .104 FreeBore ) w/ a 1-7.5 or, 1-8 Twist and 108 grain, Elite Hunter, Bergers or, Horn ELD-X's at,. 2,950+ FPS and go kill, Deer sized, Game !
Norma and Peterson Brass, Forster Dies, ARE,. easily,.. Avail !
I use 80 gr. Berger FB Varmints or, 85 gr Sierra's for, the Smaller stuff, in SAME Barrel for, Varmints.
Accuracy,..= Oh, My !! From, a 24inch, .705 muzzle dia.,.. Criterion "Nutted" Barrel.
Go with a .640 ish Dia Bbl if, walking around, Hunting,.. much !
The 6XC Has, great, Barrel Life ! And Feeds Well from, a Short, Rem 700 Action.
Slightly Less, Velocity than a 6mm Rem, But, the Deer / Antelope, WON'T, Know, the Difference !

Shot a 6mm Rem for 40 years at GH. It's a barrel burner. I called it the Rem version of a 243 WIN. I don't know if anyone makes 6MM REM brass any more. Nothing wrong with a 270 or 308. I would concider a 6.5 Creedmore.

The 6mm Creedmoor seems to be what ya need. The 6mm Rem can be a bit long for a S/A and a bit short for a L/A. A lot better bullet choices in 6mm over 25. 6mm Creedmoor has just about the same powder capacity of a 6mm Rem due to a slight less taper of the case. Creedmoor brass is everywhere. Don't overlook the 6X47 Lapua.

You should get, around, 500-700 More, accurate shots of, Barrel Life, also. ( Most Shooters Est., 2200 -2400 Rds.)
Criterion Barrels, are reasonably priced, Chambered RIGHT w/ Perfect, FreeBore and Head spacing, a "Nutted" Barrel, is pretty easy for most, Gunsmiths / Knowledgeable, Hobbyists.
I used, a Hex shaped, SS, Crown Ridge, barrel "Nut" and Set the H-S, to Close on New, Norma Brass AND, "Tight" on, the Go Gage.
Glass Bed your Action ( Free Float Barrel ), install, a cheap Timney, 1.5 to 4 lb Hunter style Trigger and, Wow !
Be sure to Relieve, a Little "Glass compound", around, the Nut.
I Bedded about, 1 1/4 inches of, the "Shank portion" of my Barrel,. thru the Tang area for, Good "support".
Getting, 5 shot, "Bug-Holes" from the Low 2's to 3's, w/ Sierra, 107 SMK's, Jammed.
3's to 1/2 MOA with, 108 gr., Hunting Loads, "Jumping", a Bit.
It's, a 10 1/2 Pound, Heavy Varmint Class, Rifle with, a Brake ( .705 dia., Muz )

Faced with your same quandry, I built a 6mm Rem AI.
Around the same time I dropped the barrel off with the Smith, a fella on another forum offered up 20 boxes of virgin Norma brass from the mid '70's vintage.
In general, I have started every build off a long action so the bullet seating is never an issue. AICS mags for the -06, 300WM or 338LM have covered all my cartridge bases.

The 25's have bullets weight's between 75 and 135 grains, wonder why folks say there are not many bullets for them ???

The factory sold the 6mm Rem with a short action. It was the standard action.

I also notice the lack of interest @ my LGS for the 25 cal components. Same boxes of leads been sitting there forever. I dont get it. Probably because it doesn’t say creedmore on it. ( not knocking creed) you know what i mean.

You sure can, Jeff. 8X57 Mauser in a pinch also, although you may get a donut from that unless you ID ream.

I typically run 7X57 Mauser through a 257 Roberts full length die to make those.

All my 257 Roberts and 257 Roberts AI have 7X57 Mauser headstamp.
