6mm Rem load recommendations

I have a Rem VLS in 6mm Rem and it shoots just ok. I was using between 45 and 48 grs of RL22 with F210 primers with 105 VLD's. Ave FPS for the best groups was 2980. It's not a stellar shooter at the moment. I also used some H4350 with 95 VLD's grouped everywhere. I jumped and jammed them both with only so so results. I want to be able to shoot this from 100 yds out to 800 yds. I have some 107 SMK's to try as well, just a lot of the Bergers here now.

What do you use for your 6mm Rem ???

I shoot Berger 105 Hybrids in a 6mm Remington, 32" barrel. Best results were with IMR 7828 SSC and Reloder 19. The 7828 load produced ~3400 fps within pressure limits. The load was too much for F-Class. It would not go 20 rounds without overheating the barrel and experiencing velocity excursions. The first 10 rounds were outstanding. The next 10, not so much. [br]
Other powders to consider are those in the same burn rate range. Like: H4350, H4831 SC, VV N550 & N160. If you have a short barrel, stay toward the faster end of the range.

Yes...it is a factory barrel 26". It has been bedded and trigger done with a L 8.5 x 25 scope. Single shot ramp in mag well.

I'd double check the factory twist before trying the 107s. Not 100% sure, but I'm not confident that they would stabilize in a factory twist barrel.

I'm still working up loads for my 6BR but, as of yesterday, I've got some fairly promising results to share.
My 6BR Norma 26” Bbl 1:8 Twist provided me with groups of .287 with 28 grains of Varget and .391 with 26 grains of H335 behind a Sierra 107 grain HPBT MK seated .005 off the lands. I've tried other powders but these are the two I'm focused on at the present time; they've given me the best results. Wanted to work up to 30 grains + of Varget but the further I went the worse the groups were and cratering on the primers (I used CCI 400) coupled with the fact that I was only increasing MV by about 30fps caused me to place greater emphasis on the reduced loads.
I'm working on seating depth and neck tension this week, using both Varget and H335, to see if I can tighten those groups up.

Dave, as Civil82 related to in his post, you factory 6MM barrel is most likely a 9 twist and probably won't stabilize 105-107 class bullets. Your best bet with the factory barrel is in the 87 to 95 grain class of 6MM bullets. And as far as powder IMR-4350 is excellent in my experiences with more than a few 6MM Remys I have owned. Get ahold of some Hornady 87 grain V-Max bullets and some IMR-4350 and you will like the results. Great cartridge!

Both of my factory M700 Varmint Specials in 6mm Rem had a 1:9.25 twist (measured). One would shoot the 107 SMK fine. The other would not at all. Same loads and barrel length. Doesn't really make since. When I built my 6mm Ackley 6-7 years back, I was wanting to shoot the 105 Bergers and 107 SMK. I talked to Sierra. They assured me that a 1:8 twist was required and a 1:9 had no chance of stabilizing the 107s. My gunsmith (Dave Tooley) told me the 1:9 would work fine. He was absolutely correct. It wears a 28" Hart 1:9 barrel. It hammers the 107 SMK and the 105 Berger VLDs. I can see the velocity boost of the 6 Ackley over the standard 6mm Rem providing the extra stability to make the 1:9 work fine. Why the factory barreled 6mm Rem both wouldn't shot - I don't have a clue. I have come to believe that very barrel is a unique being that likes the bullets it likes. You have to figure out what that its.

For the heavies in my 6mm Rem and 6 Ackley I like IMR-4350, RE-19, and RE-22.

My 6mm Remington with factory barrel will NOT stabalize bullets over 100gr. I shoot Dasher and have lots of experience with longer 6mm bullets. Flung a few in all directions trying to see if they would shoot in my factory 6MM Remington / 600 rifle. No chance.

100 gr. is the most I can use and maybe 95 gr. is better. It's a TWIST of fate???

My Rem. 40-x was a 10 twist and it would shoot the Hornady A-Max 105's
very well as Hornady calls for a 9 twist on the A-max. Load a stiff load with
4350 and you will see tiny little wads with the 105 A-max.
87's shot like a dream.

Yeah ... I'd suspect that 66mm Rem you have runs a 1:12 twist and heavier bullets don't perform very well there. I've read that the 6mm Rem factory barrel with the 1:12 didn't do much better with bullets in the 90 grain range, seeming to prefer pills lighter than that.
How well does your factory barrel perform in the 75 - 80 grain range?

My rifle has a 9.25 twist according to all the paperwork and online.

What would be a good ladder test using 95gr Berger VLD's with H4350 ?? I really don't know where to start since no Berger data available. This is the big 6mm Remington...big brother to the .243 Win .

Berger's 95 VLD can be pretty touchy. It might be better to try the Sierra 95 HPBT MK. It is a forgiving bullet and easy to tune. If your goal is hunting, you could try Berger's 95 Hybrid but I would not be confident that it would hold up at 6mm Rem velocities. The Sierra 95 MK shot very well in my 9" twist 6mm and should do just fine in a 9.25". [br]
Start at 45.0 if you are jumping, 44.0 if jammed, and increment by .4 until you get close to a good load. Then, you can fiddle the load and seating depth in smaller increments to tune. My 9" twist showed best accuracy at 46.0 with .020" jump. The velocity spread was excellent on that load and pressure was moderate. All my development was in Remington brass.

Thanx Steve.. It will see some field use...but also a bunch of ground hog shoots on paper...200,300,400 and 500 yds. Reason for the VLD's...I have a lot of them. If they don't do as expected I will try the MK's.
