6mm Rem barrel length suggestion?

Hi all,

I'm building a 6mm Remington and I got my barrel from Gary Schneider yesterday. I'm looking for some suggestions on barrel length. It's a marine contour 1 in 9 twist going into a M40A1 mcmillan stock. I'm not married to the 25" length used on the USMC sniper rifles. Weight is not an issue. It's going to be a varmint gun.

Thanks

26" - 28" is the length I like on my varmint rifles, handy enough to get the needed velocity, but not long enough to be nose heavy.......

If you are ever going to use the rifle without a bench or bipod, I suggest you stay in the 24-26" range. Long heavy barrels are great for the bench, but you do not lose much in velocity when going a little shorter. You gain maneuverability when going shorter.

My 6 Rem is a prone LR gun and has a 28" med. Palma contour and a 1-7.5 twist. Shoots and handles great in prone. Just my 2 cents.

Most of our prairie dogging is done with a bipod but I did take about a dozen shots from the sitting position last year. Our locations are more of a stalk and shoot so it will definitely spend some time on the sling.
