6mm Rem varmit build

Planning to build a heavy barreled 6mm Rem on a Rem 700 long action for long range, 400 plus yards, for ground hogs and a future prairie dog shoot. I want a fast twist barrel so I can shoot up to 105 grain bullets. This gun will be shot from a bench with a front rest and rear bag. Not intended for a carry gun.
Looking for suggestions as to barrel length, contour, and if in a muzzle brake is advised to hopefully see bullet impact.
All suggestions and comments are appreciated.

My stock 700 VLS shoots great.
That being said, I haven't ran 105 Amaxs through it yet. I'm betting my 1:9 1/4 won't stabilize them, but thats part of the fun.
400yds its definately a killer.
I do kinda wish mine was a long action though, I single load my longer rounds.
My 85grn GK hunting rounds work fine through the mag.
I know I'm not much help.
I hope your project turns out good!

A good choice on the long action, ejecting live rounds is tough with the long bullets in the short action. Have you thought of the AI version of the 6mm?? I don't no if you have a smith picked out, but check out Richard Franklin from Virginia. He build some very excellent rifles, and one of his top picks for varmints is the 6mm AI. You can see his work at www.richardscustomrifles.com Hope this helps some...Good Luck

I would build it with a 28" plus a muzzle brake in a LV #7 contour. I have 2 and is about perfect for the Rem action.

Ammohouse:
I too have a good shooting VLS but in 204 Ruger. Want to move up in bore size and bullet weight for long range shooting, groundhogs in Ohio and Pa, and maybe dogs in the west, therefore the move to 6mm. This will be a 6mm Rem and not the 6mm BR. Most likely a single shot. Thanks for the reply and good wishes.

PA Shooter:
Not planning on the AI version at this time. I'll see how the standard 6mm shoots and re-chamber if unhappy. My barrel is being made by Joe Keller, Keller Precision Gunworks, Emporium Pa. He will also do all the smith work. This will be my fourth rifle by Joe and all shoot well. First one is a 280 AI, second one a 7mm-300 WBY, and the last one a 338-06. All on Rem actions. Appreciate your advise and suggestions.

Mike:
I was thinking 27" to 30" with a Vais muzzle brake and needed someone with experience to comment. What are the measurements of your LV #7 contour barrels? Thanks for the comments.

Hi Chief, You got some good inputs from the above. I have shot the 244 Rem,6mm Rem) since they came out and plan to re barrel it to the same caliber. The AI would be better in a 28" to 30" in some where around a LV weight. For the twist I would go with a 1 in 8. You can shoot the 105s and 107s and go down to 75gr. if it is chambered to do so. I would go with a .271 or .272 neck. Dave Keff made my reamer with a .095 fb, 1*-30 throat. Make sure you get some one with a good reparation for installation of brakes to do the work. They can effect accuracy.

My 6mm Rem Varmint build is off of a TC Encore but I got a 26" heavy contour barrel. It's not a true bull but definitely a heavy rig. Being single-shot my barrel won't heat up nearly as fast. I am not going to put a muzzle brake on mine just for the fact I don't see it necessary. I have a 1:10" twist, good for 75-85 grain bullets. Just figured someone else's build might give you some ideas to work of. Sadly I'm waiting on my barrel to come in so I can't tell you how she shoots. Should be in within the week or next...can't wait!

Hey Chief,

What's the latest on the 6mm build??

I just got a Rem 700 Long Action today and I want a Rem 6mm AI with a 28 to 30 inch bbl. also.

What stock do you plan to use, etc??

Cheers,
Jim

if you go with the 6mm go with the 6mm ackley improved its one of the better improved rounds.you will gain quite a bit and your brass will not change so much after you fire form it.

I have two 6mm Remingtons, a 600 and a 788, that I may have rechambered to 6mmAI. If going back into the same action, will the barrels have to be cut back? If they do, how much shank will be lost? For the 6mm REM, I currently have a Lee Collet neck die, a Forster Ultraâ„¢ Seater Die and a Redding Body Die. Can I get by with buying only the 6mmAI Redding Body Die?

The rifles will be used for varmints and deer hunting by my grandkids. I also have a 6BR setup, so could I have the two rechambered to 6BR? Would that be a better choice? What about the 6x47Lapua?

Thanks for your help,

Richard

ps:
Still watching for results using the 7 twist 6mm barrels.

They must be cut back one turn,1/16th"), but if they have any mileage on them, it would be wise to cut them back far enough to clean up the old throat.

Thanks Catshooter, what about a 6mmbr or 6x47 Lapua?

From my original post:

You would have to set the barrel back a little further, but it is a good cartridge. The 6x47 Lap is a little smaller than the .243 Win, and if that's the direction you are going in, I would recommend that you just go with the .243 Win - Lapua brass is available for the 243 Win, and dies are off the shelf, and in group "A" with all makers, so costs are ow.
