6mm rem 58gr v-max

i'm new at varminting and purchased a used 722 rem med weight 24" barrel in .244 and using 58 gr v-max bullets with a current charge of 44 gr of 4064, cci primer rem cases seated out to touch the lands.i consistently shoot.500 range 5 shot 100 yrd groups. is this a good start? i shoot coyotes in western Canada out to 600 yrds not to may gophers.is there a better known recipe i should try? thanks......

Check out these articles for some suggestions. The featured rifles are both 6mm REM AI, so you'll have to load down a bit.

Richard Franklin likes the 75gr V-Max: "I've been shooting the 6mm Rem AI for over 15 years. Whenever I build a new one I start with the 75gr Hornady V-Max, seated pretty far into the lands, pushed by 51 grains of Vihtavuori N160, working up to about 52 grains. N160 seems to be perfect for the case, yielding great velocity, about 3860 fps) and excellent accuracy. This gun is a 14-twist, and I normally shoot the 75gr V-Max. As far as I'm concerned, the 75gr V-Max is the best factory bullet you can shoot. It's the most consistent, with a better BC than other brands in the same weight range. But to get a 75 to stabilize in a 14-twist, you have to really boot 'em out there fast--you need to smoke 'em out at 3750 fps or better. The faster you push a 75 the better it's going to shoot."

Might want to give some of the 75 - 95 grain bullets a try. I've had great results from Sierra's 85 grain HPBT from my 6mm Rem as well as the 95 grain Nosler ballistic tip.

However... Those 1/2" groups of yours are going to be tough to beat! I think your present load oughta work just fine. Regards, Guy

thanks m700 for the tip! i will try the heavier bullets, and the more i read about acceptable groups for coyote hunting i think i'm on the right track! i'll keep you posted

tried heavier bullets at the range today and also seating depth and found that my own shooting skills will not let me shoot under 1/2 inch so more practice my make'em smaller:,

Any time I'm shooting 1/2" groups from a hunting rifle, I'm a happy camper! Heck... I've settled for a lot worse than that. If you're getting 1/2" groups on a regular basis, you're shooting real well.

Good luck on the 'yotes! Guy
