6mm PPC

"Generally" with a competitive bench gun , whats the average number of shots before it's time to set the barrel back or rebarrel . I'm asking how many rounds do you guys average in a 6mm PPC match gun before you decide the accuracy is gone and it's time to cut the chamber off and rechamber or rebarrel the thing ?

Most of the top shooters are putting new barrels on at 700 to 1000 rounds. The ppc will go 2500 for a Varmint barrel as long as you don't overload it to much.

I really think it's to hard to say. alot i think depends on the barrel steel, how many hot loads, how many round fired while the barrel is blistering hot. how it's cleaned and maintaned..ect. some say to set back every 400 rounds or so.. I have seen them shoot well to 1,500 rounds.. I personaly shoot them till they wont shoot no more.
you have to shoot untill you feel the accuracy has fell off..then you either set back or replace..

I am asking based on what the top competitors say .

I realize steel , velocity of loads etc etc plays a part .

I was also anticipating an answer of 1000 rounds or less before the barrel got setback or replaced .

FJIM pretty well summed it up. Get one & get started. You'll like it! I have one of my old barrels set up on a varmint rifle & I really don't know how many rounds it has on it, but it still shoots half a minute of a crow.

Happy Shooting!
PPC

FWIW , I had one a few years back !

This question has to do with the same sort of thing I asked on the CBA forum a day or two ago . Seems a cast bullet Unlimited rifle in 30BR is supposed to be good for something in the 5,000 range so I was wondering about the 6mm PPC , 6mm BR or 22 of the same thing with jacketed bullets in full bore competition . I have no inclanation to build a full bore match gun I am just curiouse .

Although a 6.5mm PPC or 6.5mm BR sound kinda intriguing !

I've gone through 6 different *very* competitive barrels on my PPC... the first 4 each have 4-5000 rounds on them, and could still win any competition including the nationals (I'm still working on the last two). One of those barrels got a top 20 finish at the SuperShoot with well over 3000 rounds on it. None of them have ever been set back - or re-crowned or anything else. Granted, I tend to shoot lighter loads and bare bullets but I'm regularly beaten by a buddy with over 9000 rounds on his barrel (he shot a .15 agg two weeks ago with that gun) with his tamped in loads and moly bullets - also never touched since its initial chambering.

Point is that "top shooters" may have access to a lot of barrels and thus phase them out quickly, but a PPC does not necessarily lose its accuracy at some round count. Top accuracy comes from shooting them a lot, not working on them.

I know a guy who had or might even still have, havent seen him in awhile..a 6ppc with 2,300 rounds on it, he says. I do beleive him..He was in third place after the first relay at the super shoot before the wind got bad.
it would shoot in the zero's... he had the barrel bore scoped by some experts and they said there was no way that that barrel had over 500 rounds, but he had documented over 2,300 rounds..
it is really too hard to say how long a barrel will last before it's accuracry is gone...My experience has been in the 1,500 range with the few button rifled barrels i had...I have one now with 1,800 rounds and it still shoots but the throat is fire cracked bad enough that it picks up powder fouling and starts throwing shots and it's hard to get the throat clean..dont get me wrong it will shoot .350's all day.. maybe if i switched to another powder it might not do it so bad.
