6mm Hagar

I'm a little low on info for 6mm rounds, i see in the Bulletin yesterday that Carl Bernosky is shooting an AR platform in 6mm Hagar an inquiring mind wants to know some info on this round and his rifle

http://6mmhagar.com/index.html

Here is the website. My understanding is that it is formed from a .30 Remington case. Carl has been shooting it for a few years, and obviously doing REALLY well with it. As with many cases, brass is the big problem. I do not know of any commercial sources for formed cases. Doesn't mean there aren't any. Maybe someone on the forum knows of one.

The 6mm Hagar is the round John Harrison came up with when he was looking for more performance from the AR15 spacegun at 600yds. The case is formed from .30 Rem brass. The shoulder is pushed back and the shoulder changed to 30 degrees. The neck is then cut and trimmed to length and the brass fireformed.
Unfortunately two different companies that promised to make brass for the Hagar failed to do so [ Jameson and Silver State Armory].
The Hagar will send a 105gr Berger moly down range at 2900fps.
To say that Johns' goal of improved performance at 600yds has been achieved is born out by Carl Bernosky having won the Nat'l High Power Championship with it 2 times and his performance with it this year.

I made over 1200pcs. of HAGAR brass three years ago before giving up on ever seeing any commercial stuff. My original upper (Krieger bbl. chambered & fitted by John Holliger) shot very well at 200 & 600, though I had a few problems finding a really killer load with Berger 90s for 300.

The HAGAR's proportions are very similar to the 223's, which - along with John's very careful bbl. work - provided me with a rifle that never hiccupped - not one alibi in two years of shooting it.

If someone had come out with good quality HAGAR brass with small primer pockets, I'd still be shooting it. The 30 Rem stuff had large primer pockets, and didn't stand up very well to loads that were not even really warm. Even the harder Jamison 25 Rem cases I'd used to make 600yd. brass didn't hold up very well - some of them even had body splits after one firing. Too bad - I think it's a heckuva XC cartridge for the AR.

Is there a way to make 6mm Hagar brass from 6.8 SPC brass (case also derived from .30 Rem.)? Speaking of, how does it compare to 6mm WOA (6.8 SPC necked down)?

Back in 1998 I put together a ".240 Rat"...which sounds nearly identical to the 6mm Hagar. Having cut a reamer for generous neck clearance & suffering the weakness of the brass with a LR Primer & factory extraction groove cases were formed from .225 Win brass which allowed neck turning & a minimal extraction groove to be cut. This gave durable robust cases which in a Sako L461 push 55 gr Nosler BT's to 3700 fps.
Patrick Ryan at Redding would still have the specs for the Cusom dies.

Don't confuse the .240 Rat with another 6mm variant for AR platform rifles called 6mmRAT, based on a resized 6.5 Grendel case in the manner of RCWIII's 6mmAR & 6mm AR Turbo.

John Holliger can build you a 6RAT and die sets are available for it also.

Yes, brass issues with a 6HAGAR almost makes it something to put away after trying, but mine shoots so good at 600 yards I'm reluctant to give up on it just yet. Jamison's not making .25 REM brass presently (they may in the future, or maybe not) so the only available parent case is R/P .30 REM & it also suffers from using a large rifle primer.

Those of us who shoot this cartridge would very much like to see some factory ammo made available that's built with a SR primer instead, as much for the better consistence of SR primers in such a small case as for the extra brass to beef up the case web.

Yah, Carl used his 6HAGAR to win twice, in 2006 & 2007. 2008 saw him finish 2nd & this year too - by one point out of 2400! - despite his breaking the record by a goodly number of shots.

yes but , i doubt very much that the 6 hagar had all that much to do with carl,s shooting ,don't forget he won with 308 bolt guns years ago, he is going to be like most of the top shooters competive with any reasonable caliber. BW Davis

as i said above re: carl B, he just won the Pa.state champs with a6.5 creedmoor bolt gun from creedmoor sports with factory ammo just a798X800 BW Davis

He was gonna use that in 2009 for the Nationals but decided instead on the 6HAGAR gas gun again, as this past August. Glad to learn he's got the manual shifter working for him!
