6mm dasher freebore for 105 bergers

My reamer shooting Berger 105 BTM has a 104 FB and it has worked great in several rifles so far.

Terry's right and I think that is what Dave Kiff would recommend if you were buying a reamer, that is what's used for 107s.

My current Dashers FB is .125 based on Hybrid 105's. There seems to be a move to longer freebores. I just ordered and received my own 6 Dasher reamer (Kiff) and it is .135.

I just received one with a 0.112 FB, after talking to Dave and mentioning the 105 Hybrids. I think I'd still be able to use the VLDs effectively with this as well.

I have 4 Dasher Reamers with another due to be delivered in a couple weeks from JGS. I have 4 different freebore on these, with a very short .104", a .125", a .135" and a .163". The .163" gets a lot of use. :)

I grind Dasher reamers every week. By far the reamer asked for the most is the many time record holder at .104 FB . The next one is .118 FB. Then there are free bores from .060 to .160 . If a dummy round comes in it will most always touch on the 100X comparator at .104 to .123. It is a fine line on how folks are seating all very close. The very first Dasher Dan Dowling and I made was a.060. Dan reamed the barrel and found that the throat was short and told me to make a reamer with a little more free bore . I ran one out at .104 and the rest is history. Many years have gone by and many records made and broken but if you would like a rifle that will win right out of the lathe and burn into the sweat spot as you are winning matches along the way. I still say start either a .104 to a .118 FB and kick but until it burns out to about .148 and start all over again this is right in there with Donavans spec's. Allot of folks have opinions on whats correct and whats not and I agree that the newer bullets are much different in lengths but the gunsmiths money is better spent on a .104 FB and a spiral throater to achieve the desired throat length needed per customer. For the one time purchasing shooter I suggest sending in a dummy round or going with my suggestion of throat. There is a fellow or two putting their name on the Dasher print and telling the masses that their color is the best well it may be good for them but if you call me I will send or give you the best info I can for your application. I have many prints on file and I will send them out to any one who needs them for reference . . My two cents Thanks Dave Kiff 541-826-5808 or dave@kifftool.com

The thing most folks forget is equally important on the Dasher is the neck diameter and the case length. No turn blue box should be .270 to .2704 the old print has .272 or Dans was and still is .271. Most of my customers like .268 and .269 clean up neck's on there reamers. The case length has been all over the map also . The old prints started at 1.555 and then out to as far as 1.570 . I grind 1.563 for Grizzly and Midway's shelf stock. With the new blue box lengths being shorter I think the original length is the best. I grind the reamers .005 over my customers dummy round length so they do not get the carbon build up at the end of the chambers case mouth. I would like more folks to give me feedback on there preferred chamber length. Well back to the grind. Thanks Dave

Speaking of records and the Dasher. The finest marksman I have ever had the privildge to shoot with, Samuel Hall, has stated on here his multiple record setting 6 Dasher has a .125" FB. this was before the introduction of the Hybrid. I`d love to hear his opinion of freebore with that new bullet. With his talent, it may make no difference to him.

I have folks sending in some of the reamers made in all different lengths from 1.570 down to short reamers made to 1.525 per customer prints and we shorten and lengthen reamers all the time. You can change free bore lengths and neck sizes at the same time. I have a few JGS,Manson and ours in here now for alteration. It would be nice to run a batch together The cost is 25 buck's to shorten and 66 to grind to a longer length or complete change. With the Blue box brass being so different I recommend changing the old reamers to suit the new brass. Hell I have a fellow that shot lights out in three matches with .160 FB, a .060 jump and he also has a .104 chamber he jams that wins matches. Sam Hall chambered both those rifles. The Dasher is a very forgiving round and there are many combinations that will work and work very well. Send your reamers in and I will grind them to suit your needs Thanks Dave

Dave, Keep up the great work,

And by the way is my Dasher reamer done yet? :) :)

Thanks Travis

Dave, be watching for a 6 BRX reamer to change into a 6 BR. I will include a note with details, and lets get this one up to your current standards on the cutting edges please. I will need a 6BR go gauge as well, Tim

Amen to the mighty 6MM Dasher! One heck of a cartridge! And to Dave Kiff, thanks so much for chiming in! i enjoy reading your posts.

We had this discussion a couple of years ago. Dave hit it right on the head with the .104 to .124fb being about optimal. Not that you can't win with more or less freebore. An exceptional barrel can win no matter what it seems. My Dasher reamer is a Kiff .124fb with a .268nk. My first try with a Dasher was with Mike Davis's .104fb .268 Kiff reamer. It shot just as good as my .124fb. Stay with what Dave tells you. If your rifle won't shoot, it probably ain't the reamer's fault. I have seen many barrels that are not that great. Most barrels will shoot good, but not great. If you find a hummer barrel and you can shoot, you will know it and so will everyone else you shoot against!
