6mm Dasher build help

Biggabe

I'm building a 6mm Dasher and here's what I've got so far. Bordon BR action, Jewel BR trigger, Krieger 6MM (.236) - 8 Twist - Heavy Varmint - Stainless barrel that should finish out at 28" or so. I need some input on the type of stock to use for the 600 to 1000 yard shooting, something that will track the bags well, and the type of chamber reamer to get. The Dasher I have now shoots the 105 Berger bullets great and the chamber is set up with a .272 neck and a .128 freebore. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Gabe

Benchrest...probably the Tooley MBR

F-Class...I like the lowboy stock and many people have recommended the Robertson Composite Stiller F-Class

Thanks Bryan, been looking at that one myself. I guess no one has any thoughts yet on chamber readers.

Get the same thing you have for your current chamber, especially if you already have a bunch of brass formed for it. Otherwise just call up PTG and order one. They had some in stock when I called. I ended up finding the same thing on here and saved a few bucks. I went with the .2704 neck and 130 freebore.

I use the .2704 with 132 FB. The 7.5 twist .237 works better in the wind. I like the Hammer Head it is 5''stock. Or the one Bostrom makes it is a 4''. Larry

22 dasher and savage dasher both are using the reamer that I ordered. It seems to fit the new Lapua brass the best and the free bore is right on the money for hybrid VLDs. As for a stock take a look at the Shehane tracker II. It's set up for long heavy barrels and has been very successful in the long range game, both 600 & 1000 yard shoots. Also wood is better than synthetics for absorbing vibrations so go with a laminate rather than one of the McMillan stocks.
Good luck with your build, it sounds like what I'm about to build….BAT SV RBLP, Krieger heavy Varmint 8 twist cut to 28", jewell, tracker II in Walnut laminate with the dasher chamber cut with the 2.704 neck and .130 free bore from P.T.& G.

I really like a fiberglass ST1000. I run a Hammerhead and think it's about the best option right now but it also take a 5" top on your rest and I know that isn't for everyone. I'd look at the ST if you don't have a way to hold the Hammerhead.

I agree with hoier, I just built one almost identical to what you describe and the Hammerhear from PR&T tracks beautifully, however if you don't care to change your rest top the Fiberglass St1000 is a very good option. Here is what mine looks like.

The 3" Lowboy from PR&T isn't bad either. I mean, it's no hammerhead, but it's still serviceable.

I forgot about the lowboy also, another good alternative. The PR&T's are very straight. Very nice Jason. Well Gabe, at least you have some food for thought.

I put an old barrel on it that I had setback so I could at least shoot it a little. Very little load work, it's been windy everyday and it's a new to me chamber, but it's showing a little promise. We'll see this weekend if it rains enough for me to play instead of work. It's going to take some getting used to, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna like it. I have a new rear bag ordered, the stock is riding the hand rest part on this gater bag.

I planned on doing a hammerhead stock right up to the last minute. I got to thinking about the extra money I had to spend on a rest top/bag and then a new case to haul the thing around in. I just figured I would try the 3" and if I thought I needed 5" I could always add a plate to it down the road. I was worried about making weight too with the B action but I'm pretty sure it's light enough to add the plate and still come in under. It turned out better than I thought it would.

Isn't it a dasher?

Yes. 123FB 2704 neck. It used to be a 104FB 2704 neck. This chamber is a little tighter and the brass was clicky, but I think I solved that problem.

I'm looking for the new dasher brass. If they hold the primer pocket like Lapua. Bart bullets seem to like being jumped. When I have tested both I will order my reamers. My smith will make my sizing dies with the second reamer. Till I test both I will stay with 2.704 neck with 133 FB .Any thing less then 133 FB with Hybrids jumped .030 the donut can be a problem. My new barrels are .268 and .135 freebore. I gave up on hybrids. Just couldn't get anything consistent with them and different lots were so different it was like a whole new bullet everytime I ran out. I just ran out of last years batch of 103 Vaportrails today. Opened up a new box and did some measuring and checking to see what I needed to change. Nothing. That's what I changed. Same distance to lands, same shank dia, same pressure ring, same bearing surface, same setting on the seating die. I'm on my 3rd "batch" now and it's been the same story for me each time I change.

Agreed, the hybrids are just too hard to keep up with. Ive gone to 105 JLK's and they are fantastic. My chamber is .268 nk and .125 fb. Krieger 8 twist 236/243. Have got two new 30" HV Maddco barrels for the next rifle due to be finished hopefully around july.
