6MM Dasher barrel length question

Looking at building another Dasher and was wondering what is the general consensus on barrel length? My first Dasher's barrel is 30" finished. I have 2 blanks one being 31 and the other 32 inch. If i use the 31 inch blank what is the maximum finished length for that particular (Bartlein) barrel. Can I squeeze 30" finished out of it or what would be a good length? I am thinking barrel nodes and have definately found the one for my first Dasher.

26 inch doesn't do bad. I thought bbl length and powder burn rate should work together. Varget and RE15 shouldn't need a real long bbl. I may be wrong on this just my opinion.

I have a 28 inch Broughton, a friend has a 32 inch ?. He shoots 50 fps faster. I have a 28 inch krieger that is 125 fps slower than the Broughton. Didn't anwser your question but food for thought.

I have 2, 6 dashers one at 28" the other at 30"

As well as a 22 Dasher at 30"

If the 30" tubes are too long they will be perfect in a rechamber or two......... ;D

I concur, I have had fine results with the 26" tubes and this allows me to make weight.

Thanks for the replies everyone, at least I know great barrel life is there. Currently shooting mid range BR matches at 5 and 600, and looking into the 1000 yard plateau next year. I am going to go with another 30" finished Dasher on a Pierce action and at least I know I can always cut and rechamber or set back down the road.

Frank, I went that route before 30" set back too29" but the lands are rounded,i don't know if it is worth it. It still shoots but it would have if i didn't set it back. I now plan to go with 28" i don't see a big gain in speed over 28" and they are hard to make weight and balance but what ever works for you is the right answer....... jim

I really think i'm going 26" this will be my first 6 dasher.. I want to use it as a 600/1000 light gun and also a live varmint.. I have had a 28" barrel'ed 25/06AI and just never cared for the extra lenght..I have had a few really good shooting 6 BR 26" barrel's .. so i said i'm going to due 26" and i can see most are useing 28" .
do you really think i would be hurt with a 26"?

No, I'm running 107s @ 2985fps and very accurate out of my 26in

I rechambered a 30 in. Brux no taper to 26.5 in. to make
the 17 lb weight limit. Had to go this length to get under
weight with a muzzle brake.
I was pleasantly surprised to see 2904 fps with the 115 DTAC.

I believe it was 2007 when the small group record in IBS 600 yd
matches was broken 4 or 5 times. Each time the barrel length
was 28 in. Larry Isenhour, Rodney Wagner, Mark Schronce, and
maybe Sam Hall, Richard Schatz all held the record for a few weeks that year.
The record shrank to under one inch.

For a while the guys Piedmont guys went to 30 in. but now most have returned
to 28 in.
Good thing is at 28 in. you can still get a rechamber or two.

Birdog, thanks for the insightful post, my smith also agrees with 28 finished length. I should still be able to get to that 3025 fps level with no problem. Good thread with real world replies and I thank everyone! :)
