6mm . . . BRX vs Dasher

Just how much difference is there between these two rounds?

???

Just give me the scoop on both, mostly the Dasher.

I do own and very accurate BRX, but I am considering a Dasher.

Dennis

Nat, this is what I am told.

But some swear the Dasher is a "little" better.

Just looking for opinions.

I have several actions and stocks looking for a barrel.

I do love my BRX

DennisH,

I had a 6 BRBS a 6BR IMP, a little more blow out than the Dasher, Great round. I sold it to build a Bat action 1000yd gun. My gunsmith at the time got Bob Crone's BRX reamer, I had him punch my Hall action 6BR to 6BRX. It shot great. Then he built the Bat in 6BRX. I shot 3 IBS 600 records, one was a 0.749" LG small group, At that time only 3 people had fired a group less than 1" with a light gun at 600 yds. I am not going to change to a Dasher from a 6BRX. But nothing wrong with a Dasher. I think the difference is in the barrel you get, some brrels are better than others in all brands, sometimes you get a Hummer. All custom barrels are good, sometimes you get a great one.

Dennis:
As you know I have a 6BRX and love it. Since chambering out to the BRX my scores have improved exponentially. Having said that like you, I watch what is winning and Alton's Dasher is kicking butt at most matches he shoots. I watched Tim Thompson from Memphis shoot a bunch of X's at a practice Friday for the upcoming MS State Championship. He was shooting a Dasher. I am having Alton build a Dasher for me as we speak. Who says you cannot own both? Wrap one of those new actions in a Dasher and see how she does.....

Wes, this is why I ask the question. Did they just get a good barrel for their Dasher build?

I am also studying the 30BR, this looks like an interesting round! Any comments/thoughts?

Dennis, all these for F-Class?

I have tried 6.5-284, 6.5x47 Lapua, 284 Shehane, 7mm FCM (short magnum), 284 Winchester, 6BR, 6mm BRX, and 6mm Dasher. After all the money in barrels, dies, gunsmithing, primers, bullets, powder, and a little time I have decided that I only need two. A 6.5 x 47 Lapua (139 Scenar @ 2,920 fps.) for midrange matches (and some long range as well), and a 7mm FCM (180 Hybrid @ 3,050 fps.) for long range.

This allows me to have less clutter in reloading room, and allows me to focus more on actual shooting than tinkering with the "new" gun and getting it to shoot, only to start on the next one as soon as the current one is shooting. It becomes a cycle and before you know it, you will find yourself loading and testing instead of actually shooting and competing with a proven round/load. Also instead of having 6 barrels in different 6 different chamberings, I now have 3 or 4 of each chambering, as soon as one goes south, I'll screw another one on and keep on shooting. You will get to know your gun and it's ballistics much better this way.

Erik, I was thinking about benchrest, maybe, but the above is about the best advice anyone could get. I am currently selling some of my collection and will concentrate on just 2 or 3 rifles.

Nothing beats trigger time. And yes, you will spend a fortune supporting all these rifles!

Dennis

Erik: I've pretty much reached the same conclusion as you: only two different chamberings to do it all. Several chambers in 6ppc for short range, and several 8 twist 6BR's for a maximum distance of 600 yards, although local match's are fired at a maximum of 500 meters.

All receivers setup as switch-barrels. Keep it simple.

Have tried some of the "improved" cartridges and always return to the above two. ;)

I totally agree with Erik and Frank - but for a slightly different reason, at least to start with.

Living in a 43' diesel pusher motorhome, I wanted to simplify things by reducing my inventory to two rifles from 6. I've got about the same money in the two that I had in 6, so components are better. But I don't compete, so my rigs aren't high end. I have a Savage PTA and a Savage 12 BVSS. 4 barrels - a Criterion 284 Win, two Criterion 6XCs, and a Shilen 6-284. Life is indeed a lot simpler in terms of components - currently 3 bullets, 2 primers, 4 powders, and 3 cases.

I am really interested in the 6BRDX more than any of the others.. no false shoulders when fireforming, you get to keep the same neck lenght as the orginal case.

It is a simple choice, look what wins at long range bench rest. Look what holds the records and look at what wins the IBS national. Then look at the 600 yd game and make your own decision...... Don't let the FF. bother you the end result is worth it. ......... jim

I don't know, are we just gilding the lily?
I switched from 243 WIN to 6BRX last spring and improved my shooting in the Sacramento long range nationals BEFORE I properly tuned the load!
By the time I got the load right, I was taking home multiple ribbons in club shoots.
There are a couple dashers her that don't do any better than me. Of course, there is an old guy here named Ken (O.K. just a bit older than me!) that still cleans my plow with his plain Jane 6BR.

I have concluded that the basic 6BR is a GREAT round and just maybe the BRX and dasher can make 1000yds just a wee bit easier, but I really think that by the time you have either a well shooting 6BR, 6BRX or 6 Dasher, it is all up to the guy pulling the trigger! And, in my often flawed opinion, that is true for all those "different" cartridges that some one else sometimes wins with. Maybe that some one else is just a way better shooter, not necessarily the cartridge.

After all, I have seen guys winning national matches and records with all the
"wrong" equipment like, Savage actions with Accutriggers, cheap bench rests, cheap scopes and even the "wrong" loading presses and loading techniques!
Heaven forbid! Are these guys simply great shooters?

I have been told this by many shooters. Tune your favorite one in and master it.

Trigger time is the key to good shooting.
