6MM BR

I am new here on the forum and wanting to join the fun. Have been shooting 22BR and the vintage sniper matches with a 1903A1, at 300 and 600 yds. I would like to shoot the 300 and 600 BR. and not sure what type of rifle to start with, leaning toward the 6mm BR or 243 win. Would appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks, Don

You can't go wrong with a 6 BR or BR Improved.
Don't even conside any other caliber.
Any load you come up with will shoot lights out!

+1

You will love the 6BR.

Same here......You can't go wrong with a 6BR or BRX or Dasher. With a BR all one has to do is load and shoot it.. Rather simple. Once you get the right load worked out, you are competitive. With the "improved" versions, it takes just a little more case prep, but you can't go wrong there either.

If you look on the IBS website at the match results from Piedmont, you will notice almost everyone uses a BR or and improved version.

Enjoy your BR and making it work.

If you want to get started with a minimum of fuss, buy a Savage long range bench rest in 6mm BR Norma with the 1 in 8" twist. I love mine, and so does everyone else I know that has one. I get very good results with Berger 108 grain match bullets, Lapua brass, 29.5 grains of Varget, and Federal 205M primers. A Sightron 36 power scope (either model) will give good results for not a lot of money.

You might want to think about calling Jim Briggs with Northland Shooters Supply. He should have all the parts to put a rifle together pretty much the way you want. A buddy of mine just last week called him and got a VLP stock, Model 12 varmint action, ground recoil lug, squared barrel nut, and a prefit Criterion Barrel 1 in 8" 6.5 Creedmoor for about $1100 shipped to me (I got my FFL). Not bad for a custom barrelled rifle. I don't even want to know how much I got in both of mine. He couldn't find the exact Savage rifle how he wanted it. So I told him to call Jim and see what he had to say. I guess he said the right things. But, all he'll do is sell the parts. Jim told my buddy that he wouldn't put it together due to his license. Just some to think about.

And another one for the 6BR ! The only problem I have had is that once I got one I had to have more of them in different twists.

Don,
Like all the others have said, for competition the 6mmbr is your best caliber. The .243 caliber is for hunting purposes.

I have both the .243 and the BR. Both are great guns, and great shooters. But I would also prefer the 6BR. Seems to be more accurate, and to me more fun to shoot. But I would never discount the good old .243

I have the 6BR in an 8 twist, and a 14 twist. In my experience the 14 twist will outshoot the 8 twist out to 200 yards or so. I have shot many groups in the less than.2 range with the 14 twist. I can do the same with the faster twist, but not as consistant. But if I am shooting extended ranges like 300 and out, you need the heavier bullets and the faster twist. The 14 twist will probably not stabilize a 75 grain bullet, so keep them light
