6mm BR to get my feet wet with

O.K. people

I want to build a rifle that meets the LV requirements but in 6mmBr Norma-Lapua using no turn necks on a soon to be trued Rem. 700 action. I would also like the rifle to perform admirably at the longer ranges as well. Truth be told the rifle may never see a sanctioned event but I would like it to be legal for the LV class just in case. Any ideas on barrel twist, length and type as well as neck dia. would be appreciated. Stock suggestions and trigger type along with any other advice will also be welcomed.
I have about 1250.00 dollars to spend after the action trueing process.

Hi David:

For shorter ranges, 100/200 yards, I like the 1:14 twist with 66 or 68 gr. match bullets. For mid-range, 300/500 yards, it seems at least a 1:10 twist and for the long ranges of 600/1,000 twists all the way to 1:7. A good compromise is 1:10 until you decide what your interest is.

True "no turn" necks are .272". Some use .270" which just needs to have the high spots turned off the necks. Either is fine.

Mickey Coleman has a good reputation for truing Remington actions and he has made me two 6 BR barrels with .272" necks, for Savage actions) which have been excellent.

Usually, to make LV weight,10.5 lbs.) they use a "LV contour" and cut the barrel to make weight, usually in the range of 21-22". The barrel maker web sites will list info on what contours and dimensions they offer.

Good luck ...

first off thanks for your response.

Would a 21-22 inch barrel handicap the 6mmbr at longer ranges?

I guess if I had to dedicate to any distance it would be in the 600 yard range or under for egg shoots and such.
That being said if a rifle cant shoot one ragged hole at 100 yards I don't need it.

Thanks
David

I shoot all ranges from 100-1,000M

I'm using a krieger 1:8" 28" barrel.

I really have to "push it" to get 2900fps out of a 107gr sierra and on really hot days I can't do it without burning primers.

At 600, I'm using 95gr VLDs right at 3050fps which is right where the accuracy node is with this bullet.

I had a 24" barrel before this one and couldn't get enough velocity to make shooting 600 in any kind of wind plausible.

No 1 gun is going to do it all... many of the 1000M guys are using 30" tubes...

Also for shorter ranges the 1:14 or 1:10 twist barrels with flat base bullets give much better accuracy. AND the slower twist barrels allow the gun not to torque in the bags so bad... much easier to get back on target,a big issue when you have limited time to fire your group... especially if the wind is blowing)

I realize some guys are getting higher velocities pushing the 107s BUT they're shooting longer barrels and custom actions that'll take the overpressure without you getting gas in your face!

I wouldn't use a 700 for this unless the firing pin has been bushed.

Any load that'll push the 107s fast enough is "stout" and you have to be very carefull.... they're all compressed loads and if you don't have enough neck tension, the bullet will work its way up which leaves you with a very tight jam into the lands which of course increases pressure even more...

Been there.

I won't dispute a single thing Kaferhaus has noted because we've seen velocity differences up to 130 fps between different custom hand-lapped barrels. But my PacNor 3-groove 27" will easily deliver 2920 fps with Varget, IMR4895, H4895, and Norma 203B,similar to RL15) with the 105 Scenars. Jason's Broughton barrel by contrast is topping out at around 2850, whereas Jackie Schmidt was getting 2990+ with a Kreiger .237 bore.

So... you just have to find out what your barrel will do. Chronographs make a difference too. My velocity data came from a Shooting Chrony. There's a good chance if I rechecked it with an Oehler, the numbers might be less.

But the loads I'm running,30.3 Varget) are not compressed. That's with a freebore of about .090 measured the Kiff method.

Why a light varmint? HV weighs in at 13.5 and will give you a lot more lee-way as to barrel length, contour, rings, mounts, scope etc. I had a HV on a Grizzly action, 25 inch Shilen HV contour barrel, jewell trigger, Kelbly two screw rings and bases with a Nightforce 12-42 in an Edge stock and was still under 13.5 by an ounce, and this was with a eight inch tungston rod in the weight chamber.

Since you plan on egg shoots and 600 yards with other fun shooting thrown in why limit yourself to the constrictions of a LV? You can still shoot NBRSA and IBS matches in HV the only thing you won't be able to do is shoot the LV class.

First off, Thank you all for your response.

I am trying to get to many games out of one rifle. I have researched this project in depth and had read were a lot of people were using 10.5 LV and being able to shoot both classes with it,which would probably work fine in a 6PPC but my heart is set on 6mmBR. ReedG said a 1 in 10 would be a good compromise “until I decide what my interest is“, which I think was a nice way of saying make up your mind before you waste your money. In addition, Danny’s suggestion of a 13.5 HV makes a lot of since. I think that is the route I will take.

Thanks
David
