6mm BR chamber

I have a Shilen heavy, fluted, SS barrel that has been reworked by some unknown party. It was a 6PPC as I can see the stamping on it yet. I have had the barrel bore scoped and it looks to be just past break in. The barrel has been shortened, re threaded and re chambered to a 6mm BR. I intended to make a truck gun and walk around varmint rifle with it. I did a chamber cast today and the chamber neck diameter is .2765". What, if any, problems will this generous neck dimension create? Thanks.

I don't think you'll have many problems. The biggest deal I can see is your brass might not quite last as long without annealing cause its gonna be having alot of movement blowing out and being pushed back in.

Thanks for the reply. That was the only thing that I could think of. It won't get a tremendous amount of shooting, so I should be OK. Some gold box Lapua brass would be a plus. Also got to thinking last night though about needing a reamer to set the head space. I would like my own 6BR reamer eventually, but am wondering where I might find one with the .2765" neck chamber dimension to rent. I don't want to buy a reamer with that neck dimension.

Does anyone know where I might possibly rent a 6BR reamer with the above mentioned neck chamber diameter?

I've never heard of anyone running a neck that big. My guess would be the only way to get one would be to buy one which I'm pretty sure you don't wanna do.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure why this thing was chambered with such a large neck. I don't have a lot in the barrel. Can always turn it into a tomato stake. It will be impressive for that as not everyone has a fluted SS tomato stake!

Have you thought about shortening it up a little more with a new chamber for the 6BR ??
I have a few new pieces of Gold box 6br brass if you need them, but you'll still have a lot of room..

Hello Preacher. Looks real iffy that there would be enough straight barrel shank left to go that much further. My preacher is learning the gunsmithing trade as something to do in retirement. If we ruin the barrel, not out much. He purchased a new lathe, but it has a 3 jaw chuck, so needs an upgrade there before we can start the project. Looks like we need about .016" more depth to get the bolt face clearanced properly. Then we can see about headspace. Hopefully if all else fails we have enough straight shank left to do as you suggested. Thanks for your help!
