6mm br barrel life

Hi all,

Just wondering if there is any sort of rules when it comes to barrel life in the 6mmbr.

Thanks,
mitchell

Pretty long.... Comparable to the .222 / .223
Better than the 22BR.
Peak accuracy 1500-2500, though 2500++ rounds with .300 groups is very common.
Keep it clean and well maintained, quality cleaning components)and you can expect a long shooting barrel. All of the above IF the barrel is a quality custom.

Several variables to answer that and not all bbls are equal. I've seen some go way, way longer than they should and others, not so much. And it depends on your accuracy requirements, too. If you need a gun to agg in the .1's, a good rule is maybe 1500 rounds. If you're ok with a gun that aggs in the .3's, maybe 4000. Some will go and go, though. I have a 6 Grendel bbl with roughly 7000 rounds on it and it is still shooting phenomenally well...BR well. But that's not the norm at all. It finally started pulling copper like crazy but it still shoots great if it's reasonably clean.

My second Krieger (short range 6BR 13.5 twist) just hit 6K rounds. Still groups under a quarter inch at 100 yds, with the occasional sub-tenth. Brass is looking kind of ratty, though. I typically run pretty mild loads (though I did run Column bullets at over 2400 for a few months, too.)

You? Clean a barrel? NAW! LOL As Joe said "come on man!"

Oh I clean. Just not after every card. Typically after every day of shooting. 125-200 rounds using danzac coated bullets. I always bring my cleaning stuff in case I see it fall off or anything.
Hey, this past weekend I shot about 130 rounds (I had some I knew nothing about the load on and was just ff brass) without cleaning, almost a 1st for me! But if I can beat Mike Schubert I'm good with that! I'm taking a brass hammer next time and screw with Bruds ammo! (NOT).

Just remember it is still a 6mm. Just because it's the easiest 6mm, doesn't mean it will last that much longer. Fast strings of fire will burn them up. If you can keep it clean and in tune, I would expect +/-3k (depending on the specific barrel). However, I don't shoot BR or F-Class, so factor that in too.

I too saw a gradual falling-off in my first (and much abused) 6BR barrel after that round-count in mid-range BR competition. Being more cautious these days, I'd expect more, but not a doubling or anything like.

I also saw a clone of my current barrel that came to the importer in the same order and with identical spec (from a top US custom barrel maker) be shot out at well under 1,000 rounds. The owner kept pouring powder in when the barrel hadn't fired enough rounds to be fully run-in, and for a few hundred rounds both MVs and precision (including 1,000 yard BR) were remarkable. ........... then it started blowing primers and dropping loads / MVs never returned the earlier precision. My current very mild load went off-tune earlier this year after c. 350 rounds down it, and a check came up with a 73 fps rise in MV, so I'll have to re-tune the load.
