6mm Berger 105vld?????

Midway has two different 105 vld, part #24528 and #24429. Both claim a BC of .532. What's the difference?

Berger doesn't have the #24528 on their site, but they do have the #24429, but they rate them at .493.

What gives?

Just got thru ordering the (500)Berger # 24528 .243 105 vld match hunting bullets from powder valley inc.

He said he had 30 boxes on the shelf $27.11 each

I believe Lynn has it right. Berger went through a change in their 105 vld recently to improve the meplat uniformity with the thick jacket target bullet. This shortened the bullet and fattened the meplat. I believe their hunting bullets stayed the same?. They put out a video and explanation on their website - copied extractt and link below

"Change to 6mm 105 grain VLD Target bullet
Filed under: Announcements, BC, VLDs — mgallagher @ 9:11 am
Overview
In our continuing effort to provide shooters with the best possible bullets and information, this article will address a recent change made to one of our most popular bullets: the 6mm 105 grain VLD Target bullet. Note that this change applies to the 6mm 105 grain VLD Target bullet only, not the VLD Hunting bullet."

I am not sure how this has placed them with the shooting community. More accuracy , but lower BC might bode well for 300 yards but longer ranges might opt for different projectile?

The Hunting Match bullets are fine. Same as the "old" VLD's. I used the new .493 BC "VLD" (not...) bullets and found them both less accurate in 2 6BR's as well as being much harder to steer at 600. I'm still cheezed at them for that one.

I believe they made the change because shooters were running the VLD's very hard in some rough barrels and the ensuing heat caused failures.
The thicker jacket cured the problem but it was ruining a large number of ejection pins on the point up die. They enlarged the pins diameter to cure the breakage problem but in doing so it caused the meplat size to increase thus lowering the bc number.
They went through alot of trouble but have cured the major issues.
You can point up the bullets using a Pindell,Whidden or Hoover die and re-gain the bc or shoot them as is.
If you weren't having any issues with your load or barrel you can stick with the hunting bullets and all is well.
Lynn

Thanks Lynn and Obtunded.
For me it is hard to imagine I will want to have a go with them. If others have the results you have obtunded it is unlikely many others will either. Maybe as you said Lynn only those that are pushing them hard - but then if you want to push them hard (for ballistic edge?) then you have probably lost that edge anyway with BC drop. So these bullets might be for those that want to push hard (with rough barrels) and point their bullets - not a high percentage of shooters and not a great marketing strategy I would suggest but may answer the problem for a few????

In a post on " pushing 105 VLD's hard" Eric said they are working on a new 105 with a thick jacket and better BC.

I have a feeling it will be a Hybrid.

We'll see

I've recently had the same problem(s) with the 95 gr. VLD# 24427. We're in the middle of our g'hog benchrest matches, and I'm running low on the supply. Have had a backorder at Powder Valley for a long time ( Sinclair has had them on B/O since December). P.V. did have the hunting version, #24527 in stock, so I tried them. They are "good", for me, but not like the Tgt. version. Seating depth to touch is .020" shorter, point of impact is 3" high & left at 200 yds., and the groups are slightly larger. They were said to have been rebuilding their J-4 jacket machines, they are finally up and running, and expect shipments to go out "shortly", as related in an e-mail from them.

Not to add more confusion, but I have some 105 VLD moly bullets, about 4 years old, part number 24128. The box states a BC of .556. So my question is how are the current hunting bullets the same as the old VLDs if the BC is different. Both the old bullet and the new hunting bullet should have the same jacket. Then the new target bullet would have the heavier jacket. Right????

300meter, Berger changed the BC numbers on several of their bullets a few years back with no change to the bullets themselves. I believe Bryan Litz did some extensive testing on the bullets and found the stated BC's to be a little off from what actual testing proved them to be, so Berger changed the BC numbers. And yes the target bullets have the thicker jacket.
