6mm AI OAL?

I had more when I had less

I know that there are a few here that shoot a 6mm AI.
I would like to know what your actual OAL is,from back of case to tip of bullet).
I was thinking about building a repeater using this cartridge and a short action Remington 700 with the factory mag well.
I intend on using the Hornady 87gr V-max.

You'll be restricted by the magazine length which is about 2.825'. Give yourself a few thou to be sure nothing hangs up during feeding, will put the boattail of the 87 grain V Max into the shoulder. It should work, if you don't mind seating below the neck.

In my Rem 788 and I load a 87 V-max to 2.850' and in my 700 REM 2.8' Bullets are .150' off the rifling and will shoot .4 to .6 all day long. Great varmint/deer cartridge.

Here's a visual. The cartridge is loaded to 2.850', the absolute max that will fit in my magazine. As you can see, the V Max boattail is into the shoulder. Seat a little deeper to give some wiggle room and it's completely in the shoulder.

You didn't ask my opinion but I'll give it to you anyway.:) Try the Sierra 80 grain Blitz. In my rifle I can shoot them faster, they are more accurate, and they always go ker-plop when/if you hit something.

Cheechako,
im in the process of building a 6mm Al, do you mind me asking what twist rate you use in yours. Im thinking of a 13 for shooting 75 V-max's.

What do you think?

I shoot two twists. An 8 for the heavy bullets and a 12 for the medium to lightweights. Obviously, a 10 would be a good compromise. A 13 will work great for the bullets up to about 75 grains but if you ever feel a need to try the heavier ones you may be handicapped. You should think about a 12, or even a 10. I've shot my 12 all the way out to 600 yards and it will shoot tiny dots at 100.

Others may feel differently but that's my opinion.
