6mm, 72.5gr Malsby Bullets, help!

Hello all! New here. A bud from the 24hr campfire told me to check here about these bullets.

I recently scored 1000 of these and have read that they are very accurate. I will be loading them in my plain vanilla .243 Win. Problem is, I can't find any data on these bullets.

I am currently putting together another .243, with a 1-9 twist, heavy bbl and want to give these a try as well.

Do any of you have data for these bullets? Thank you!

I doubt you will find any specific data for your bullets, but you should be able to use data for a 75 grain bullet with appropriate safety precautions. I knew Sonny Malsby and shot with him back in the late 70's. His bullets were made on J4 jackets in Rorschach carbide dies. Excellent bullets in about every way. He and Walt Berger were nearby residents of Overland Park (I'm pretty sure) Kansas. I lived about 20 miles from those gentlemen. Have fun shoot those bullets, I'm sure they will be quite good.

Very interesting, and thank you for the reply. I heard that they were of high quality and ran into a guy today that used to shoot them in the early eighties. He said that they were one of the most accurate bullets that he ever shot, and offered to buy all of them. I nicely said no, as they should keep my .243 busy for quite some time.

So if I start using data from a 75gr, being that it's 72.5, should I start at the low charge and work my way up?

How do I do this safely? I have always(like most of us)had a published starting point. Any info appreciated.

Probably going to use VARGET, or IMR 4350(as I have alot of both)

I would start low but not at the bottom, maybe a step up one load from the bottom and start there.

Yep, As jbm suggested, start at the lower end of some 75 grain data and use common sense and watch for pressure signs. Sonny was a good bullet maker and a competitor of Walt Bergers in the custom swaged bullet arena in the midwest long before Berger went commercial. Malsbys bullets were not hand made like Walts bullets were. He had a hydraulic system that he had adapted to a RCBS A2 press. In my opinion it wasn't quite as good as a fully hand swaged bullet but still made excellent bullets. His system didn't have the capability of culling the rare bullet that just wasn't right that could be detected by hand swaging.

I would like to know if there are any .224 Malsby bullets remaining anywhere as i used up all i had. A world Champion BR shooter gave a few to me a few years ago. I would like the 52 gr. if someone knows where i can find some. I understand that they are no longer made. ..... SEMPER FI!

Oold thread,

I have a stash of @1600 62.5 grain Malsbys, I'm waiting on delivery of a Sako AI sporter in 6 PPC, I hope it likes them, and I hope they work well as a coyote hunting bullet. I'm pretty sure they won't know what hit them. I gave a couple boxes to my nephew to try in his 6mm Rem. He said they were the most accurate bullets he's used...compared to commercially made, so...
