6mm/30-30 Ackley Improved Help

Very interesting cartridge, but the last discussion is going on almost 9 years ago...

Next to it's parent case.

That looks pretty sweet

While it is a very old thread I'd love to know if someone has any proven load data for this. Just chambered a couple contender barrels.

Aaron

I have a 14" Bullberry 7-30 Improved for awhile and it's been about the most accurate TC barrel I've ever owned. The improved 7-30 anyway doesn't add much capacity so the data is just a tweak to straight 7-30 data.

For other 30-30/7-30 based wildcats, ask around over on Specialty Pistols. There's a number of people that have loaded for the different versions. There's a guy named Bobby Tomek that has a lot of good information on them.

I have killed a lot of deer with a 6mmX30-30 Improved and I use the following powders with various bullets and bullet weights:

Winchester 760

IMR-4064

RL-15

Varget

Viht N-150

For the heaviest 6mm bullets, I like IMR-4350

What platform are you shooting this cartridge in? I'm using a contender so the pressures can't get too high. Much less than a bolt rig can take. Plan on shooting 85gr bullets in mine. A buddy wants to shoot 105's in his.

Ruger #1, Winchester M70 and Remington 700.

The Winchester has had the bolt face opened to accept the 30-30 case, and has been set up as a single shot with a bench rest follower bedded in place.

The Remington bolt face has been modified to accept the 30-30 case, plus the addition of a Sako extractor. This action also has a bench rest follower bedded in place, and the gun set up as a single shot.

The Ruger will do 1/2" @ 200 yards on a bad day, and both bolt action rifles will do 1/4" @ 200 yards.

I just finished a lightweight Remington M7 in the same cartridge and this gun weighs just a few ounces over 5 pounds scoped, and as soon as it warms up above freezing, I will try to develope a coyote load for it shooting Sierra's 85 gr. B.T. - H.P. Game King.

That's a light rifle! How'd you get it that light?
Aaron

BRGuy,

What is the heaviest projectile you shot with the cartridge and at what velocity @ 1/4 inch at 200

Sierra's 90 gr. Game Changer @ 2,700 fps does 1/4" @ 200 yards.

The heaviest bullet I have ever shot in any of my 6mmX30-30 Improved cartridges was a 115 gr. DTAC. The case was maxed out with a .200 case neck length for maximum powder capacity in a 30-30 based wildcat cartridge necked to 6mm. Velocity was 2,500 fps., and 100 yard accuracy averaged 1/8" for 5 shots using a 36X Leupold target scope.

I guess I am a natural skeptic, but I would have to see this kind of accuracy from those types of rifles. No offense intended, but that is superb Benchrest accuracy that will win many 200 yard matches. Just sayin'.

I am not a registered target or bench rest shooter. I build rifles for a living and enjoy shooting the smallest groups I can. As for the Ruger #1 shooting 1/2" groups @ 200 yards, these guns are capable of surprising accuracy when properly tuned and with a good barrel, chamber and trigger.

ALL 30-30 based cartridges in a Ruger #1 and even the T/C Encore WILL do 1/2" groups @ 200 yards from a properly built gun. That has been proven literally hundreds of times over the years, so skeptics really don't matter.

I guess I have never seen a Ruger or T/C that is properly tuned or with a good bbl, chamber,or trigger,,,,wink,,,Roger

Not to beat a dead horse, but those 1/4 inch groups at 200 yards are usually for the barber shop shooters. I have shot competition since 1997 and found that there are few 1/4 inch groups shot at 200 yards with the most accurate 6 PPC rifles in the world. Below is a picture of 5 groups that I shot at the NBRSA Nationals in Kansas in 2010. I won the Sporter 200 yard competition that day with my BAT/Leonard/Krieger with 36X Valdada scope. (blind hog found an acorn). If you will notice there is NOT a single 1/4 inch group in the five. It is easy to say that a rifle will shoot 1/4 inch 200 yard groups, but it is very hard to do. Good shooting...James
