6mm-284

What's your intended use?
I've got 3 currently, had them since about 2000-2001.
You don't want to shoot strings with them or your barrel will be toast real quick.
I had 2 of mine built for coyote (stands) and 1 for walking coyote.
Stand guns were Rem 700 SAs with sleds (SS) tracker ST1000L stocks and Bill Shehane bbl blocks, 29.5" Hart bbls.
The walker was on a Rem mdl 7 with 20" bbl. I don't recommend the short barrel version way too inefficient.
All were 12 twists and barreled by Hart.
H 1000 is the speed king with either 87 V max or 88 Bergers. Accuracy is pretty close between the 2 of them.
I'd concentrate on your cold bore zeros and get that first shot on your critter.
6.5 284 Lapua reformed is what I use and in the high node 3820-3845 they'll last 4-5 firings.

Mine is a 30" Brux 1-8" for F Class back in 2010
Found H4350 and with 105 Hybids to run 3260
With RL -25 and and 105s got 3393
Rl-25 and 115s at 3296
Also Retumbo with 115s @ 2912.
All those went under 1/2 MOA to about 800 yards then went wild at 1K.
Next barrel I had nitrided - didn't shoot.

I bought a lot of stuff from an estate and have a lot of loaded rounds also brass. Wondering if it would practical to build this caliber.

My 6-284 is one of my favs. If I ever had to downsize or sell off what I have my 6-284 would be one of the very last to go.

Mine is built on trued SA Rem 700 w/Lilja 12tw. I mostly only shoot 75gr Vmax and it is hell on coyotes. Definitely NOT fur friendly!

I'm 100% with posts #2 and #6 above. I've owned 2 of them. Very accurate varmint caliber! But keep your shot strings short. CJ6 is just about right coldbore and second shot are the most important and will keep your barrel more of a long time friend. Use a 26" or longer barrel.

My 2 longest shots on coyotes were made with the last 6-284 I owned. And with a 10-12tw barrel with 75gr Vmax or 80gr Blitz Sierra they are NOT a fur friendly choice on coyotes, but easy to find.JME. WD

So 284 win is very popular in F Class. People seem to not mind the shot strings. I can't imagine the 6mm with the same powder would get the barrel any hotter. But then I don't know.

Eh? There's a world of difference between 6-284 and the parent 'straight' version, just as there is between 243 and 308 Win.

The issue is [case capacity to] bore ratio. The 284 Win case holds ca. 66gn water and 7mm bore diameter has a bore area of 0.063 sq in. Divide the former by the latter and you get a ratio of ca. 1,050. Reduce the bore size to 0.243-inches and its area drops to 0.046 sq in, a reduction of 27%. All other things remaining equal (powder burn temperature and peak pressure) you're shoving the same amount of heat down a bore with getting on for a third smaller surface area - so everything gets a lot hotter! The 'bore capacity ratio' for 6-284 is ca. 1,410 (65gn water capacity divided by 0.046), a huge rise in this metric over the 284's 1,050 value.

The 7mm Rem Magnum ratio is smack on 1,300, and this was long regarded as the boundary for entering true 'over-bore' status with all that entails with respect to barrel life. (Modern powders have raised the boundary .... but even so!)

There is a useful table in an old Accurate Shooter Bulletin re this:

https://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/?s=overbore+cartridges&submit=Search

so you can see where 6mm-284's value lies.

Anyone shooting this caliber I have a lot of brass tell me your thoughts thanks for looking.
I remember when Bob Hutton published data on the cartridge
many years ago and results were spectacular. Shoot it slow, clean it often and replace the barrel as necessary.
Everyone knows it is on the extreme edge.
If had already had the brass and dies, I would have some fun with it.
Good luck.
