6mm 250 Brass

I've sort of inherited this barrel/rifle. It's a beautiful custom gun. Bore scoped the barrel and it is almost new, with no wear.
I tried chambering 22-250 brass but could not close the bolt (figuring resizing it to 6mm.)

So reaching out to you all.. What brass does it take ??

Much thanks

Gina

I have 22-250 brass necked to 6mm and 250 Savage reduced to 6mm and neckturned. They both work fine.

When you neck up a cartridge it shortens it a little in my experience. Might try necking up 22-250 brass to 6mm check for fit if it still doesn’t chamber then try running it through a resizing die and bumping the shoulder back several thousandths then see if it fits. If none of that works the only thing left would be a small base resizing die. (If it’s not chambering from getting stuck not just being too long.)

Rather than buy a box of 22-250 brass (which I do not shoot) I found some some range brass, I do not have an dies for 22-250 brass.. Should I try "new' unfired brass ?

I'm in the same boat, I recently put money down on a 700 barreled in 6x250. A standard 22-250 case wouldn't chamber.

I have both a 30br and 6ppc rifle neither will chamber a piece of brass without having the shoulder bumped back several thousandths first. And that includes after necking up which by itself shortens the brass a little. I think that’s par for the course with custom and or wildcat chambers. They’re on the smaller side when it comes to length. Try bumping the shoulder/resizing several thousandths until it fits that is I f the brass is too long. If the brass is too fat and is sticking while trying to chamber or extract you need a small base resizing die. Redding makes small base dies.

If your barrel is like a few of my wildcat chambered barrels the brass new or used isn’t going to chamber without being shorten by necking up first then by running a piece of brass through a resizing die and bumping the shoulder back. Just out of curiosity I measured a piece of lapua 22-250 brass with calipers neck to base and zeroed the calipers to the brass then I ran that same piece of 22-250 brass up on a Wilson .242 neck mandrel necking it up to 6mm. Then stuck the brass back in the calipers that were zeroed from before necking it up to 6mm and the brass shortened .0095 thousandths. That by itself would probably take care of your not being able to chamber the brass problem. If not then you’d have to get a sizing die that doesn’t do the neck of the brass like a Redding body die for 22-250 and bump the shoulder back even more. Do it in .002 increments till it fit. If the brass is also too fat get the Redding small base body die instead. Or if you want to do the neck at the same time while reloading you’d have to find a die that’s an actual 6mm-250 die which might be difficult to find I’m not sure about that though.

I just put a 6-250 together and used 6cm brass. Had to run it through the 6-250 die to get it to chamber. Loaded and fireformed 50 pieces.

Greetings,
Get some Winchester 22/250 brass, a tapered .22 to .243 expander, and a tin of Imperial wax and go to town.

@Gina1 when you mentioned you tried to "chamber" a piece of 22-250 brass, did you mean just place it into the un-mounted bbl, or did you put the bbl on the action?

If it was not mounted, I would take a chamber casting to see how the details of the shoulder, neck, and throat look and then decide what to do next.

If you mounted the bbl on the action, what dimension was your Go-Gage?

ETA: and if you can ring Holland's they may tell you what to expect up front.

Use a sharpie on a case first to see where it is binding. At that point you will have a better idea of the next step. For example if it is at the .200 line only you might need a small base die or new brass. If it is just at the shoulder, push it back 0.001 or so till it chambers.

Reviving this, I finally got my new to me rifle home chambered in 6x250 and scoped the barrel, it looks to be pretty low mileage.

Where can I find dies? I've been scouring the web with no luck. Even just a body die and I can scrounge up a Lee collet neck die (with 6mm mandrel). I still need brass, but the dies are going to be more difficult to find.

They're out there. Whether they work or not might depend on the reamer specs used to chamber your barrel. (?) A 22-250 bushing die with approx .269-.271 bushings won't work?? JME. WD
