6CM testing Results

Anyone using AICS mags with their 6CM?

Yup. I'm using them with an Eliseo RTS stock. They work quite well--but there is one pitfall: if the rounds don't stagger properly, then they can jam up on feeding the first round. If you make sure that there's room (you can push the top round of a full mag down about a tenth of an inch or more), then the magazines work great. Especially for highpower rapid fire stages--the magazines release the rounds so smoothly, there's very little slowing down running the bolt.

I am using AW and AICS mags. They work fine, but much smoother if you mill out the forward rib on the mag. The shoulder rubs against it.

Finally got all my parts in. Gun is heading to the gunsmith in the morning. Can't wait to get this gun finished and to the range. While waiting on parts I was able to score 500 brand in 243 win cases, 10lb of h1000 and 1000 berger 105 hybrids.

How are yall still getting Lawton barrels? I couldve swore they closed down.

Anyway, for anybody/everybody shooting heavies in a 6mm; how does the DTAC compare with the 115gr Berger in bearing surface length? Also, between 105gr Berger Hybrids, 115gr DTACs, and 115gr Bergers, which has the highest BC if all were to have pointed tips? And which out of the three will have the highest performing ballistics if all of them had pointed tips AND were moly-coated? Basically, which has the highest (velocity x BC) number out of all of them, if shot from the same rifle, all moly-coated with pointed tips? For that matter, how much more velocity could one expect from the 105 Hybrids over the DTACs and 115 Bergers?

One more thing(this will likely cause a stir), which bullet out of the three mentioned is considered the most consistent? Obviously, different rifles will prefer different bullets; didnt mean it like that. What I mean is which bullet usually has the most consistency in regards to weight, bearing surface length, etc?

One one more thing, excluding the 6BR case and its improved variants, which 6mm cartridge seems to be the most favored(or most popular) choice for Benchrest shooters, in particular 600 and 1000yd Benchrest?

Thanks so much yall, for any/all replies.

jbhotrod,
You really should start a new thread with all those questions. That way this thread about testing the 6CM won't be hijacked.

Joe and all,

Has there been any update to the issue you reported a while back with the 6CM not working as well with the 5R barrel as it does with a four twist?

I've checked this thread and only found a response or two stating they work fine. Has anyone performed any testing to confirm or dispel?

Thanks,
Terry

Cant even fathom that would be an issue. It will shoot well with what ever Land and Groove configureation you could dream up I would think.

From a conversation I had with Joe Hendricks , he told me to use .237 bore barrels.

It seems to me that's a personal preference issue and nothing more. The .236" vs .237" bore size debate has gone on for many many years with no definitive conclusions one way or the other. After all the years of the debate on that issue, you can bet there would be some data one way or the other if there was really a true difference (but no such data exists). The only possible exception to the .236" vs .237" bore size debate is for the short range benchrest discipline shooting slower twist barrels with lighter bullets where barrels are generally retired rather early on in their life span relative to other shooting disciplines. If the 6CM is so finicky that it will only shoot out of a .237" bore (which I believe is hogwash) there's something crazy wrong. We have a 243 Imp 30Ëšcartridge which is very similar to the 6CM and it shoots just fine out of .236" or .237" barrels, and the same with the 6mm Super LR we have. Personally I have never really noticed any real accuracy or pressure issue difference between the two bore sizes, but I tend to favor the .236" bore size only because it has a slight amount more "meat" on the lands (.0005" additional height per land) and for a barrel expected to last for a high round count, I feel a little extra "meat" is a good thing for wear factor - - but that's it!

Another reason I chose .237 is because I figured that if a .308 works well with a .005 (.308-.303) constriction, a .006 (.243-.237) constriction is plenty and a.007 may be excessive in my opinion.

Caliber .30 barrels typically have a Ø.300" bore and Ø.308" grooves, meaning .004" grooves. I have both .236" and .237" bore 6mm barrels and see very little difference. If shooting 6mm Lapua Scenars, which tend to run a little on the small side, .236" barrels seem to work better. Largely a matter of preference.

A fair number of the 30 cal barrels we sell are .299" x .308" so the total is .009" (or .0045" per land) and we repeatedly get praises of how well they shoot. I think the reason that .236" vs .237" debate has continued so long is because there is no real quantifiable distinction accuracy or pressure wise (they're both within the "ideal" bore size window) so what you get are people attributing more superstition and supposition to the bore size than anything else. Brux 6mm's are all .236" and some awesome shooting and records have come from their barrels. Hart 6mm's barrels are all .237" and I have had and do have some Hart "tack drivers". In Kriegers and Bartleins I have both bore sizes in larger 6mm cartridges and the performance differences between the bore sizes is a non-event.

Good shooting with your barrel whatever you choose.

Robert
