6BRX pros and cons of neck length

Can this case be improved from a longer neck? Because I had a lot of time on my hands this winter, I taught myself how to reform cartridges from other brass and practice turning necks. I have been thinking of having a BRX built but I've heard people say they wish the BRX had a longer neck, so I made one using some old Winchester 308 brass I have.

Interesting, I've read a longer neck helps with throat erosion and would help get the bullet seated out farther but I'm not sure of the other benifits.

Before I found brass I made a 6 br out of a .243 case. It took quite a bit of force to turn all that body into neck. If I would have trimmed first it would have helped.

I have been through about a dozen 6 BRX barrels over the last 6 seasons shooting a pair of rifles. If you have the rifle throated properly for the bullet you shoot the neck length will not be an issue. Two yrs ago I trimmed 50 cases WAY too short by mistake. I went ahead and loaded them, they shot just as good as cases trimmed properly. I have won quite a few groundhog matches with them shooting from 100 to 500 yds. As for barrel life from the short neck, I run 2000 to 2500 rounds year from each rifle. The one barrel that seems to shoot through the wind, i used for 2 seasons and won the last 400yd yd match I shot with it. With a bore scope its really ugly but still shoots well. Don't believe every thing you read which is often spouted by typewritter shooters, not those who have actually"done it" or "used it". The 6 BRX has been great for me from 100 thru 1000 yds.

I've built a few BRX's for myself and friends. It's one of, if not my favorite cartridge. The neck length is a non issue. Like Jeff said it's probably mostly from keyboard jockeys that have never owned one. Build one as is and enjoy.

6.5creed, I was thinking the same thing, by lengthening the neck, one could move his bullet further into the lands thus putting more powder into the case. I tried it with my homemade long neck BRX case. I moved my Sierra MK 107gr bullet out so the base of the bullet was just above the body / shoulder junction. I ended up with a lot of freebore.
Then I got the idea of expanding the neck to 6.5mm and with a .264 cal SierraMK 107gr bullet I got .200" freebore with base of the bullet at the shoulder / body junction. This would be just touching the lands. With that much freebore, what issues could occur?
I use to have a 308 that a 175gr could not touch the lands and still be in the case, long jump, but it shot half azz decent (1.5" moa @ 100 yes) for what it was.

You may already know this, but the case you are seeking to make, virtually exists but with a 40* shoulder. It is the Norma F class brass designed and sold by Shiraz at Bullets.com. It is a 6 Dasher with a .050" longer neck.
In my case, I am using the brass to neck up and make into a 25 Dasher. Everything for the build is in hand but waiting on a die from a Whidden and a reamer from JGS. They should be here in the next week or two.

The accuracy of the 6BRX is the Lapua Brass. Don't use any other brass. Neck is not a problem.

Kmart, yes I’ve seen them. But I made my case with the same body length and shoulder angle as the BRX but the case length is 1.640” or so because of the long 6.5 bullets. I’m primarily gonna using this for hunting when I retire.

There was thread where a guy was making BRX from Norma Dasher and trimming the neck back. If your intent on re inventing the BRX that would be the way to do it with a long neck.

We here it is, from left to right; 6.5 BRX with a long neck loaded with the SMK 107gr. Next is the 6.5 BRX w/ long neck case and last a regular 6 BR.

Am I finding my freebore correctly? I use my caliper, bullet comparator and Hornady OAL gauge. First I find where my bullet touches the lands to determine my seating depth. Next I seated the bullet to that depth and take a measurement with the comparator. I then subtract the case length from the base to ogive dimension. This is what I assumed to be my freebore. If this is not correct, please someone correct me. I just finished loading some 6.5x47L and using my method came up with 0.285” of freebore minus the 0.020” I like to jump these 123gr Nosler CC and the base of these bullets are just a hair above the body / shoulder conjunction.
