6BRA versus 6 Dasher @ 600 yards

Tom I take that as a slap in the face! I feel if they are not in the middle where your aiming your not getting it done.

Odds of winning score are a lot greater, and can be done with a lot less precision.
A 7" 100 is just as good as a 4" 100 for score, but is 43% less in precision.

In reality for "group benchrest", there shouldn't even be scoring rings on the target, then we would see many people doing a better job of tuning and advancing accuracy.

Personally when I read BR results I hardly care about the scores, but I admire the small groups and those that shoot them often. There the ones I want to hear from when it comes to tuning, load development, and accuracy advancements.

I have always said when a shooter shoots a perfect score and has the smallest group in relay are shoot off he has done his job. The shooter has tuned his gun and done his job shooting. He should be award more for his effort.

I went out in the heat today and I am glad that I did. I wanted to try Reloder 15 vs H4895. We had a light (2-3mph) switching head wind and very hot temperature (with accompanying mirage). I shot the Re 15 first with poor results. The best load was the hottest one (31.5 gr.) but it was not great.

I then cleaned the barrel and tested Bart's Hammer and his Gungnir. I shot both of these seated .006 into the lands with H4895. I really wanted to test the Gungnirs since I have little experience with them. They did not disappoint. I shot 3-shot 600 yard groups with 30.3 gr (measured 1.060) and two with 30.6 gr. which measured (.858 and 1.032). The one 3-shot group that I shot with the Hammer seated +.006 and 30.4 gr. of H4895 measured 1.755. I learned a couple things today. One is that this barrel likes the warm load (30.6 H4895) and that the Gungnirs are VERY capable bullets. I used Federal 205M primers throughout. JamesDSCF0003.JPG DSCF0005.JPG

That's what I like about our 500m fly shooting.. We get a score for what we hit and then we get a score for group size. Add them together and that's our target score.. Under an inch you get a 10 score . 1 to 2 inches a 9 score 2 to 3 inch an 8 etc.. Then if you get them all in the middle even better..
Eg see pic group score was 1.16inch at 500m/547y so I get a 9.. If you get the fly its 0.1 or 0.01 depending on what scorers use.. You only need to break the line to get that score..
No point getting the smallest group on paper somewhere and only getting a max score of 10 when 1 shot in the 10 ring will give you that

Tom I'm glad your busting on Jim, that means your leaving me alone! But Jim is still a good not great but good competitor for an old guy.
So Jim when someone finally puts ten in the X at 1000 then I'll be impressed.

Joe, you are only as good as your last barrel....... now I'm getting ready to have a good time at the WO with an average barrel.... jim

Jim that's great news now everyone will leave me alone! And that's what it's all about having a good time.
There will be a lot of great rifle to compete against, hope I can do my part.

Joe if Mr. O'Hare gives you a hard time, let me know, I will be your "huckleberry" (man for the job).

I just had a crazy idea. Since there have been more than 6600 views of this thread, there must be great interest in this topic. I would buy a new barrel and chamber it in 6 Dasher if I could afford to do so. If there is a barrel maker (preferably cut rifled) who would care to donate a 6mm HV that would finish at 28 inches, I would have it chambered and test it along side of my 6 BRA. I will furnish the components, and write up my findings in the Daily Bulletin (subject to approval by Paul). The barrel on my BRA is still fresh. It is a Lederer that is a .237 bore and is 28 inches long. It is fitted to my BAT B/ Leonard stocked and it has 407 rounds through it. I told you that this was a crazy idea, but who knows, it may happen. Good shooting

James that test would only be valid on the same barrel, rechamber that barrel. Barrel quality is the same, I can not see one reason at all going back to a Dasher myself..... I would bet the powder lot is your problem, mine was after 7-8 different lots of H4895 and 3 barrels it shoots again...... jim
