6BR with 95gr VLD & Varget - Max Load?

Ok now I know this is like asking how long a piece of string so just bear with me here. My gunsmith has assembled me a lightweight 6BR on a trued Remington model 7 action, bushed firing pin etc) & coupled with a 24' 1-8 twist ultra match Trueflite barrel. It has a .271 neck & has been throated to suit the 95gr Berger VLD,I'm not sure of the exact free bore).
I've now got lapua cases, CCI BR4 primers, Varget powder & the Berger 95gr VLD's on hand.
Now my question is what is the likely max powder loading with this combination. I've seen some data showing 30.2g and others up to 31g. Can anyone shed some light on this as I'm trying to gauge my a starting load point and a likely maximum to carefully work up to.
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Fordnutter,

I shoot 95 BIB's and 90gr Beger's in my 10wt 6BR. with 32.0 gr of varget, mine is throated too long for the 95 VLD's). This is in a Stiller Diamondback action. I would start with 29gr of varget and work up to your max. The Remington action will not take as much as the DB action. The bushed firing pin will help a lot.

The 95 Vld's can be very picky to get to shoot, but when they can shoot very well. Give the 90BT a try, it is a very good long range bullet.

I have a 6BR with a 1:8 twist barrel. I shoot 95SMK's with 29.5 of Varget for rapid fire and this is a very light load that's only so-so accurate. I built up a load for 300M shooting of 30.5gr Varget at 2950fps and accuracy was much better. I have shot this at 500yds and shot a 195-8x with it which is good for me, so it was holding. This is still not a hot load. 30.5 was the heaviest load I took to the range that day, and it was the group that showed marked improvement. My feeling is that there is some room above 30.5 and better accuracy.

Thanks for the info. I'll start at 29grains & work my way carefully up to 31 grains & see what it likes. If I can get these 95gr VLD's to shoot I reckon it's going to be a fantastic combination of BC & speed from my short 24' barrel.

Fordnutter: As Mark said, the 95 Berger VLD is 'touchy', my word), but when you get it all together, it does shoot. I'm following the load info on the 6BR info page, 31 grs. Varget, CCIBR4, .015' jam, and that combo is the most consistantly accurate in my 26' Hart 1-8, .272' no-turn neck. Loaded neck dia. is .269' and I'm using a .267' bushing. Started at 30 grs., all was well, bumped it up to 31 grs., and no signs of pressure problems. Have been able to get 5 shot groups at 400 yds. that are averaging around 1' to 1 1/2'. Have not been able to fairly evaluate at 500 yds: extreme heat related mirage is wiping me, and my optics) out.

My 6br is a little different. 700 Trued, 28' Pac Nor 1:8 twist, And I found it shoots the 95 VLD's pretty good. Here are a few of my test loads with new Lapua brass. I like to run really safe loads cause IMO there is no reason to push my barrel/action/bolt to stretch it another 50fps - 100fps

Thanks guys for the info. Another question for everyone -
Does a ladder test at 100yds give you any useful information
or is this too short a distance to get any real data from.
I ask because I don't have access to a range longer than 100yds short of waiting for the weather to get better then finding
a sheltered spot on a farm & say shoot at 300yds.

FordNutter, where are u in NZ?, I'm in Tauranga

I'm shooting a T3 with a 25' Bartlein 1:10 barrel. 90-95g projectiles are doing 3000-3150 with 32-33g of 2208,Varget)

If you have a 1:8 twist barrel, try some of Bryn Blyths Targex projectiles he is making up in Whangarae. He does a 105-115g vld, plus a 90-105g rebated boattail that works in a 1:10.

Berger have put out a paper on how to find the sweet spot for their vld's. They used to say seat them into the lands, now they are saying, there will be a sweet spot, but it may be anything upto 120 tho off the lands, so experiment with 0,40,80,120 seating depths and then tine tune the one that shows the most promise.

Cheers

Grant

Hey Grant,
LOL it's quite a small world. Weve already had a some discussion regarding suppressors for the 6mmBR. I didn't even think to ask you regarding some idea of load data.
Rifle looks great just fiddling round with loads & see just
how well we can get it to shoot.
