6br velocities?

I'm shooting 95 he VLD's in a 28" barrel and 2800 fps. The Berger manual has 30.3 he of Varget at 2800 in a 26" barrel.Im using 30.4 and getting 2800 in a 28" barrel. Shouldn't I be getting a little more? What are seeing using 95 he bullets? Maybe my lot is a lot slower.
Thanx again

That can really vary from gun to gun. The tightness of the barrel or twist, barrel length, throat length on reamer, bullet diameter, lot of powder and a lot of other things come into play. Matt

I would have to dig out the Berger manual to check, but I think all of their testing was done with premium barrels. That will give increased velocity right there.FWIW,Tom
That is not always true. I had an 8 twist Krieger Dasher that destroyed brass at 32 grains and 2900 tops. Broughtons with canted lands usually allow more velocity and I would imagine different amounts of lands would effect velocity also. Matt

You should be able to run quite a bit faster than that anyways. I'm getting 2860 with a 105 Berger and am using quite a bit more Varget than you are with your 95. Now this is a total guess but I think 2950 should be optainable with your setup.

This is why I'm asking. How much Varget are you using in your setup? I know every gun is different and pressures are different. Thus work up to see the signs.

Doesn't anyone shoot 95 gr bullets? I have another barrel throated for 105 gr, but not going to use it. It's going to be rechambered to a Dasher.

That is a pretty close guess.... I ran my 95's across the chrony last summer and got 2970 ish. Mine is a 28" Kreiger that is set up for 107's. I use R-15 on both of them though. Sorry, my rifle is not a Varget fan.

Also found them (95gr) a little bit fussy to tune then changed primers and that did the trick. ;-) WD

I ran 30.5 2208 (varget) in a 26" out to 1000, it came in at 2985. Its quite a mild pressure but accurate. Shooting at 300 was a pain as I would invariably blow up spotters.

Personally I found them to be very accurate but fussy, I couldn't get the consistency I was after. Shooting FO at 300 I would back myself against anyone, not so much at 1000, in fact I would struggle to keep with the .308s.

I'm getting 2890fps out of a 22" Shillen barrel with 95gr vld's. 31.2gr of Norma 203B, by all accounts should be a warm load, but I can see no signs, even with a ungodly amount of neck tension.

I recently shot a ladder test with a new Krieger 8 twist barrel, Varget and 95 gr. Berger VLD's. The test is incomplete because I never approached any pressure signs. I was using a Magneto Speed for the muzzle velocity. THe velocities climbed slowly and steadily up the ladder in all but two instances. At 30.8 grains of Varget the MV was 2863. With 31.0 grains, MV was 2847. 31.0 was the highest charge weight that I had loaded. When time permits, I am going to increase charge weights in .2 increments from there. Ambient air temperature was 45 degrees max, so at 90, I may have had different results?

Thanx all. Those seem close to what I am seeing with this lot of varget. Timeout- Is your barrel 28" ?
Thanx again

Jumping back to your original question, what primers are you using? I get my best loads with CCI450 but others swear by BR4,s. I think that is the one,not sure. FWIW Tom.

Well, I went to the range again today. Used a different chronograph and had 2929 fps ave with 11 ES and 6 SD. This was all the same load so I feel a lot better now and it shot well.
Thanks again

Rifle is mainly for hunting. Barrel is 23 1/2". I should have posted that.
