6br short barrel velocity??

DCRYDER

I was wondering if anyone has chrono'd a short barreled 6mmbr. I was thinking of cutting my barrel to 16.5 or 18 inches to make a easier handling truck/tractor gun but was worried about the velocity loss. Right now it is 22', is getting 3550 fps out of 58 gr v-maxs with 32 grs of H322. It is a Lilja 12t #7 contour on a Remmy VSSF.

Thanks Dave

I have been loading 75 grain VMax's / 80 gr Bergers with 30.0 grains of Varget or VV N135. Remington 700, 1-10 twist 22 inch Lilja barrel I have not chronographed these and am curious to see typical velocities with these loads and what you are getting with the 65 Vmaxs. I was always told 50 -100 fps loss per inch of barrel length lost. Thanks everyone

Dave,

I'm also shooting 32 grains of an old lot of H-322 with 55 gr. moly plated Ballistic tips out of a 16' Hart barreled XP-100. Mine chronograph right at 3300. While we can't come to a absolute conclusion in a comparison between the two, as everything is the same, but different, I'd guess your loss would be closer to 25-30 fps per inch.

Thanks alot Alf. According to my ballistic program the 58gr v-max at 3550fps and 3350fps there is only 5 yards difference in point blank range with a 4' kill zone. I may go about 18' first and go from there. I have a lathe and build rifles so it's not like it costs me to shorten it a little at a time.

Hey 12MAN, I have about all of the loads you mentioned laying around. I'll try to chrono them tomorrow and post results in this thread.

Been lerking around this forum for about 2 years finally posting, BEST forum I've found by far!!!

ALF DO THE MOLY BULLETS RUN A LITTLE FASTER? ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU COULD PUSH THEM A LITTLE FASTER? I AM SHOOTING NON COATED BULLETS THANKS DCRYDER I HAVE NO ACCESS TO A CHRONO :, SO JUST BEEN GUESSING ON MY SPEEDS

12man,

No, moly bullets don't run faster. In fact, it takes a bit more powder to get them up to speed. The benefit is more shooting between cleanings without loss of accuracy.

Thanks ALF I don't know why was always under the impression you could use more powder & push them faster I don't have access to a chrono I'll have to break down & get one

Hey 12man, my barrel was 23' instead of 22'. Went ahead and chopped my barrel to 18'. Chronod the 65gr V-MAX with 31.0gr H322 bullet jammed .005' at 3308 fps with no signs of high pressure. These were full length resized cases.I've got some neck sized blown cases with 31.5gr powder to chrono and check for pressure hopefully tomorrow.
