6br rifle build recommendations

Hey guys I am new to this forum. Been reading it for a long time. I am thinking about treating myself and building a custom rifle that can drive tacks. Currently interested in a 6br because of this sight. Will be shooting max 500 yds and will be using it at the range and for ground hogs. I was thinking of a bat action with a krieger barrel maybe a 1-10 twist with a no turn neck. I didn't want to mess with sizing brass etc. Just planning on getting some lapua brass and loading same. I don't know if this is feasible or should I stay with commercially avaiable ammo. Any feed back would greatly be appreciated to this newbie

Sounds like an awesome rifle. I think your on the right track. I don't know what bullets your thinking but the 105's are pretty good at 500. More than likely you won't be able to shoot 105's from a 10 twist barrel, you need an 8". Getting the Lapua brass and loading is the right idea in my experience.

either go with the 8 twist for 100+ grain bullets or 12-14 twist for lighter bullets.

12 twist for the 88gr Berger should be great at any range.

I have 13.5 twist and shoot 68gr Bergers, I've shot 6" gong at 860m without any problems, even though the bullets aren't ment for long range.

Dansig is correct.

I recently completed a 6BR build with 14 and 8 twist barrels. I have accuracy as good as my 6PPC with the 14 twist and Berger 68s. Better yet are Berger Column or 68g Bart Ultra. Have not shot the 8 twist yet.

95 gr BIB in a 1/10 twist are superb, also try the 95 SMK. I shoot 65 gr Bergers in the same 1/10 twist and it is excellent. 85 gr Sierra HPBT are very good at 300-400 yds. Love that 6 BR. My no turn 2.704 with a 60 FB reamer is workable for me to the 95 grs.

I also forgot to mention barrel length. I realize longer is better but I also will be using it for hunting and was thinking around 25 inches. I don't know if that will affect what twist I will need. Bullet weight isn't that big of a factor to me just as long as it shoots well. Also am I on the right track using a no turn neck so I can reload brass with a minimal effort.

njorion: I'd also recommend an 8 twist, then you have all bases covered for bullet weights. Nice to be able to use the 105 to 108's when the wind is blowing, especially out to 4 & 500.

You might also want to consider buying your own chambering reamer. A piloted finish reamer, cut to your specs. will cost about $138 from PTG. With it you can have the exact chamber neck diameter (.269" or .270" would work fine for a no-turn), and the proper freebore. A better choice than to leave the all important choice of chambers to the gunsmith & whatever chambering reamer(s) he might have on hand.

If you would have no further use for the reamer, it can always be sold and you'll get a large portion of its cost back. I just can't see spending well over $300 for a barrel blank + the cost of having it fitted, then having little or no choice of the all important chamber.

Not trying to talk you out of building yourself a 6br, because theres alot of fun involved in a rifle building project. And I have no clue what your financial investment circumstances are or what you may want to use the 6br for (competition or just plain Benchrest fun like me). But if the latter is true, might I suggest you take a look at a Savage Model 12 Benchrest Target (Savage Website) rifle that has an excellent barrel that has a 1:8 twist. The suggested retail price is $1550, but I've seen that rifle selling for right around $1300. Going that way might save you some $$ and allow for some more goodies and toys to shoot a very nice rifle. Again not trying to talk you out of a build, but for the money, its hard to beat that Savage that is an extremely accurate shooting rig, especially for the money. Some of my more serious shooting buddies have anywhere from $3500 - $7500 invested in their more serious competitive Benchrest rigs and that's without their glass that's another $1000 - $3500. Just something to think about. Good luck and have fun no matter which way you go.

I just put a 6X44mm together with a Panda action and stock I had. With the barrel, reamer, chambering, cases , scope, rings, misc. I spent more than 2K$. I had purchased the action and stock years ago used as a complete rifle and the saving was tremendous. As was mentioned, the cost of a ground up build can be pricey. But with some research you may be able to find a used complete rifle of the makin's of what you want for a bit less. Beware also with new builds- I ordered the barrel in February 2012 and got it in the 2nd week of July. I ordered the reamer the same time and got it in the middle of May. The barrel got chambered a couple of months later and the first shot was fired in October. Everyone has a long backlog of orders. Regardless you'll enjoy it.

I've got the same kind of rig, different custom action. Many of the guys in my varmint league shoot the same. It's very forgiving.
