6br or 6.5x47L

So In my quest to plan out my next rifle I have hit a new conundrum. 6mmBR or 6.5x47 Lapua? I have been gathering load info here and otherplaces and it seems that to the two, when loaded correctly are almost identical in ballistics. The rifle will be used for Practical/tactical matches and some deer sized game hunting. Rifle will be built on a savage 10 short action. I would prefer to be loading from a magazine. Here's where Im at: (all data for Sea level atmosphere)

6BR 28" barrel
105 Berger Hybrid
2800FPS
1000yds- Drop 31.5moa, wind (10mph) 7.91mao

6.5x47L 28"barrel
130 Berger VLD
2780 FPS
1000 yds- drop 31.5moa, wind (10mph) 7.75moa

Do the velocities on these comparisons seem realistic? Can anyone point me to any advantage that one of these cartridges has over the other? Thanks for the help!

I think you are slow by a solid 120f.p.s. on your load in the 6.5 x 47. You should be able to obtain 2925 w/o ruining your brass. Plug that into your equation and it becomes readily apparent that for F-Open and hunting, you would be well served to delve into the 6.5 x 47>>> especially for hunting deer etc.. Both are very accurate and would serve well in F-Open, however, the 6.5 x 47 WILL surpass it at 600 and beyond! Throw in the hunting portion and there is little doubt which one should be chosen..

I can not attest to it's feeding from a magazine or not as I load it single shot in my rifles... There was some thread on here addressing that issue..

I have both of the cartridges you are considering. built on model 10 savages with sav-2 triggers.
I must have a slow 6.5x47 barrel or just haven't found the right powder yet. it shoots as well accuracy wise as the 6br. Im doing good to get 2900 fps with 120 grain bullets out of a 28" cbi bull barrel. Im using varget

Try either RL-15 or N540>>>>you will get there w/o any problems whatsoever..

ive heard that about RL15 been on the look out for it for a year now.
I just checked with a buddy who is a VV freak he has some 540 ill give it a try
thanks

Re: 6br or 6.5x47L, the real comparison would be to neck down the 6.5 lapua case to 6mm, and using the same bullet and appropriate powder charge, see the difference in ballistics, you should get at least 2-250 fps more velocity over the 6br look it up on Quickload, I know which one I would rather use, in fact it will be my next cal, and it should feed better than the 6br in a magazine also.

I have a 6br, 6.0x47L, and a 6.5x47L.

To target shoot and hunt, the 6.5x47 would be my choice. I would use a 123 grain bullet. Well, it works best in my rifle. All three of my rifles will shoot <.250 moa @ 100 yards. The 6.5x47L with 123's is my rifle of choice Varmint Hunting. 120's also shoot very well.

The 6.5 will shoot a 130 or a 140 grain bullet, just a little slower.

I would go with the 6.5x47 you should be able to reach 2900 easy with 130 bergers and H4350. I use 41.5 grains through a drop tube and it is fierce accurate. From what I have read the v450 and v550 powders are throat burners with no advantages. H4350 is good to a barrel and es and sd should be single digit if you find the right combo. Have fun, the 6.5x47 is a breeze to tune

I use N550 in my rifle, and it does offer one advantage over H4350... Speed!

I can push 123's out of my 25" barrel close to 3,200 fps. (WORK UP TO THESE KIND OF SPEEDS AND STOP AT THE FIRST SIGN OF PRESSURE)

Erik is right 3200fps with 123s is the norm!! My very first f-class gun was 6.5x47 i shot it for 2 years shooting over 7000 rounds on 3 barrels. I shot right next to the 6brs as we shoot in pairs in Canada ,the br does really good when the wind is low but the 47 will walk past it from 600 to 1000 yards, 37.5-38g varget or 37.5-38g RL-15 will get you to 2920-2950 on 28"to " barrel". 47 brass lasts forever I have over 30 loadings on my last batch. 130bregers pointed gives you .600 bc at 2930fps Make sure your reamer has .160 freeboar or .180for the 140s. For hunting the 130 bergers shoot golf ball sized plugs out of deer at 700 yards ;D< yes i take my f-class gun hunting sometimes :)

Close, my BR runs 2850
The 6.5x47 with a 140 Hybrid can be run at 2800 FPS this will put you at 6.2 MOA of wind and approx. 24 MOA of drop.
It depends on the distance you are shooting at, for the longer tactical matches the 6.5's work fine and are minimum for being able to see impacts at long range. With the BR you will find a lot of no calls on misses.
