6BR or .223 ?

I am ready to start a new build and I was wondering which cartridge I would prefer.

I have obviously narrowed it down to the 6BR or .223, but can't decide between the two.

This rifle will not be used for any competition, but I do want reasonable accuracy out to about 600 yards.

I only shoot on calm days, so wind drift isn't a big concern.

I am looking for a fun rifle to work with, so I am not going to go hog-wild with it, just far enough to skin my buddies and their big-boomers.

6BR all the way. Which twist barrel for either one had you thought about or better asked what weight bullets were you planning on using?

BR is the only way to go.. no turn neck..
600 yds means you need an 8 twist with 105 vld bergers you'll love it

I just returned from our annual 4 day prairie dog shoot. I took along 3 newly built switch barrel S/A 700's two of which were chambered in 6BR both with no turn necks cut with a new PT&G reamer, a new HV 28" CM Pac-nor 8tw and a re-chambered now 26" HV SS Hart 12tw. Being I had limited time for load development and both barrels showed they would shoot my favored load of V-max 75 - H322-29.0gr consistently into sub 1/4" groups. I loaded up 600 rounds of new Lapua and off to the dog towns we went. I could see little difference in either rifle's performance and killed in excess of 500yds with both. But keep in mind the 8tw will be needed to stabilize the heavier bullets. In fact both 6BR's out performed my third rifle chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua. I also strongly recommend the 204 shooting V-max 40's over the .223 but only after you have a 6BR. Hope this is helpful.

I will be taking this advice from you generous members, and building a 6BR in this summer.

As of know my specs are as follows:
-Savage target action
-Shilen med. contour barrel 1:8 twist
chambered for no-turn Lapua brass
- 95-105 gr. VLD's
-SSS Long range benchrest stock
-Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x44

Should be a killer set-up


By the way RJ, as my user name implies, I already own a .204. And I love it. Remington XR-100, with Jewell and bedded receiver. It really does a number on these Ohio groundhogs, and the farmers around here are making their first cut of hay.

well as much as i like the 6br,a 223 on a calm day with 50-55 v-max or 55 nosler BT is just fun.600yds is no problem plus it will smother any ground hog,pdog or coyote.

Was just out today zeroing my Savage 6BR,PacNor barrel). It shot a .260" 3-shot group with Factory-loaded Lapua 105gr ammo with two in one hole. That was just "holding center" no concern about the wind.

The ability to get results like that with factory ammo sets the 6BR,and maybe the 6XC) apart.

I am a high volume shooter burning threw 500 to 700rds in one day is very common. When you are going to be shoot many rds in one day the .223 truly shines. Your tube stays cooler longer so you need to cool it is far less. I got my BR last fall and I cannot shoot it very many times before it is hot to the touch.

When you are in a town that stinks the BR is the way to go as you will not be shooting much and your shots are spaced out. Then you get the style points far easier with BR.

6BR of course......I load 31/BM w/70 NBTs in Lapua brass,which I've used the same 100 pcs for 5 yrs now) at 3300 fps...can you say dead p/dog @ 600+ yds...mine is a Pac Nor no turn .272 neck...12 twist 26" x 1.230" no taper...s/shot Savage...Nikon 5-20...why a 12 twist ?? Because I have an 8 twist 6XC that handles the 80-107s for the long dog shootin'...the XC is a the ultimate/efficient 6mm.....

I shoot the 6BR for prone competition from 300 to 600yds; the 223 can't compete with it. But for pure entertainment, the 223 can't be beat, cheap to load and accurate; but also can be used for competitive shooting with decent wind reading skills!
