6br Norma correct?????

If one is building a standard 6 BR it is chambered in 6 BR Norma correct? Not 6br Rem?

You just have to specify. Generally 6BR means 6BR Norma. Smart guys on here can tell you the subtle differences between the brass and chambers of 6BR N & 6BR R.

Check to make sure. The Remington Custom Shop was still chambering in 6mmBR Remington, those 40XBs that they were offering in 6mmBR. I had t get them to agree to get a new reamer and then they moved the Custom Shop to Dakota Arms, who had 6mmBR Norma reamers. Very little difference except a slight difference in the base dimensions and the throating for longer / heavier projectiles.i

So if I tell my Gunsmith 6mmBR Norma I should be able to use 6BR Lapua brass straight out of the box? Very confusing that Brownells still calls it 6BR Rem and Midway says 6br Norma when you look up Lapua brass. I see the same thing with sizing dies. Just trying to avoid a kaboom with injuries not to mention well over 3K in rifle.

What is the 6mm BR? The 6mm BR that is most commonly used today is also called 6mm Norma BR, "6BR Norma", or just plain "6BR". Norma started with the 6mm Remington Benchrest case and made the neck longer and increased the base dimension slightly. Though Norma standardized the round, most people shoot Lapua brass, because of its superior quality and uniformity, not to mention lower cost. The case capacity of Lapua brass is about 38-39.5 grains of H20, after fire-forming. The exact capacity depends on your gun's chamber and the brass lot.

If you want to use Lapua Brass or ammo, right out of the box, tell the gunsmith what you are trying to do that and which projectiles. Although new at this I have learned some things, such as the throat for a Non-Turn neck will be more open then if you get a tight neck and take Lapua Brass and turn it. If you are using the heavier Lapua or Berger Projectiles, you will need more free bore than if using the lighter projectiles. Talk to the gunsmith and he / she should be able to help you.

My 6mmBR is a No Turn (.271 throat) chamber with a free bore to allow the 105 grain Berger projectiles. Some would consider a no turn neck to be .272 etc. My 6.5x47L is being set up as no turn, but for 120 grain projectiles and will be able to shoot the 130/140 grainers with some throat wear. I am sure the more knowledgeable here will correct me if I am wrong, but fortunately one of the members here has taken me under his wing and been mentoring me.

Going to use it for benchrest, 90% at 300 yards but occasionally 100 through 600. I plan on running 105 Bergers provided the gun likes them. I am a little confused on freebore but will do a little more research before posting a question on it. I've been shooting a long time but with more common on the shelf calibers (223, 308, 300 win mag) this will be my first build.

My 6mmBR is a No Turn (.271 throat) chamber with a free bore to allow the 105 grain Berger projectiles. Some would consider a no turn neck to be .272 etc.

Bob, the .272 no-turn chambering was for the older (referred to often here as "brown box/cardboard box") Lapua 6BR (Norma) brass which had thicker neck walls.
The current ("Blue Box" - at least since 2010) brass has thinner necks. For these PT&G designed their .2704" no-turn neck reamer.

Thanks for the info on the throat. Mine will be .271 and right now I have a good supply of new Lapua Brass and Lapua loaded rounds. I too have been shooting for years, but never anything like Bench Rest. I can shoot 100,200 and 300 at my home clubs, so that will also be the mainstay of my shooting with 500, 600 and 1,000 all within driving distance, so I will just have to see how I like it.
