6BR need recoil lug

potatoe

Hey the title pretty much sums it up. Would a 6br need a recoil lug - the action is pillar bedded.

Your good to go with out one. The model B as a cut out in the bottom of the action and also has the BR tang.
None of my BAT B's have a lug.

Does it have the flat milled on the bottom? The flat on the back is a recoil lug also. so if you the one on the bottom plus the back, i would say you have enough. i have a round 1.350 Bat B with the flat on the bottom and the back on my Dasher....jim

BAT tells me that they do not recommend using a recoil lug with the actions that have the cutout.

I believe that the rear tang on that guy is a big beefy sucker......

I`ve been told that the rear tang is enough,no personal experience though, all my Bat rifles are the MB action with integral recoil lug...

E-mail Bruce and ask him....Sometimes you even get a response over the weekend if he is working.

So your action does not have this cut out in the bottom right.

I would give Bat a call and see if they would mill the cut out in it for you. Did you buy the action new or used. I was under the assumption that all the smaller Bats had the cut out.

If you have a quality pillar bedding job then you won't need a recoil lug. I have owned 6BR's and never went with a recoil lug and never had any issues. Not enough recoil to make a difference.

I am at the same decision point with my 6 Dasher build. I have a drop port Defiance action with a BR tang that will pillar'ed and bedded. I know the recoil from the Dasher is not significantly more than the 6BR, but have not heard of going without the lug. Do folks go without the lug on Dashers that have BR tangs?

What are the benefits of going without the lug?

Thanks

First i don't think pillars have anything to do with recoil, if they do you are in deep trouble. The back will hold but that would depend on the stock. your action has double pins for the recoil lug, use them. You can switch barrels with out a problem......jim

The rear bench rest tang was ment to be the recoil lug, my hart is piller beded and uses the rear tang as the recoil lug..rifle was built by bob white..when i asked bob are you sure that is ok and i dont need a recoil lug,he kind of got slightly upset,,I said ho wait im just asking.. well it works very well as you can see from the target or target's if you would like..lol....

I understand the recoil lug has two pins so it is good to go for a switch barrel, having set up a couple of switch barrels on Stiller actions with pinned lug I am aware of that.

I guess my question could have been more direct, are there accuracy improvements of going without a recoil lug?

NO use the lug! Some actions have a cut out in the bottom like BATs smaller actions that work as a lug.

The answer is no..you need a recoil lug...
But as i said most benchrest actions were made with a square heavy rear tang that was ment to be the recoil lug.
that way you could switch a barrel with out worry of a front mounted recoil lug hanging down, also mated the barrel up to the action face flush and not sandwiching a recoil lug in there..And they worked very well..if piller beded properly, or glued in..And a lot of the newer actions, milled a flat on the bottom of the action that did two things, helped to prevent the action from rolling torque in the stock and the front flat of it served as a recoil lug..
go to the home page then go to actions, then to the haverkamp action and it shows what I'm saying in a picture that is easy to see. but at the same time most gunsmiths will say there can only be one recoil lug and I'm not real sure about that, i have been testing my haverkamp action by piller bededing using both lug surfaces, then just the front of the milled flat, then just the rear tang..I'm not sure witch way shoots best, right now its glued in..
but I'm really thinking that the rear tang is the way to go..after all most benchrest actions were like that for a long time and they shoot very well. but can be a little tricky to get settled in the stock and tightened up..where i thought the milled flat was great for that but at the same time a little tricky to bed if you go with the can only be one recoil lug.. My new Borden rimrock BR does not have the milled flat, just uses the rear tang for the recoil lug.
