6br initial results

I picked up my first custom 6br last week and shot in my first match yesterday. I took a generic load and new brass and here are the results.

105g lapua
30g varget
Cci 450
Coal 1.869
2 thou neck tension

The rifle does have a tuner which I’ve never used before. I shot 5 5 shot strings and most were roughly 1.5-2in with the exception of a flyer and I believe my fault for not adjusting for the barrel heading up. Center circle is 1in. Shot prone off a rest. This honestly is my first rifle I’ve gotten with zero load devolpement or a solid starting point.

1.880 i feel is into the lands with a right bolt close. I shot a couple 3 shot groups at 100 to sight in before the match at 1.860 and 1.840 and they were extremely similar groups, all 3 touching but not in the same hole.

Where would you go from here

You have some brass that's fireformed, probably 30-40 cases. I'd take those fireformed cases and work on that load. Increase by 3 tenths at a time. One thing I would do is find your chamber length and trim all your brass 5 thousands under. If you have a reamer print that dimension should be there. You also need to find your dimension to the lands to see where you are in bullet seating depth. One other dimension you need is to make a note on the head diameter of your new brass so you can monitor pressure as you work up your loads. The 6BR shoots better at max or close to max pressure. That 6BR is capable of much better groups than what I'm seeing there. It's an awesome shooting little cartridge. Let us know how things work out.

Cory, I think the experienced guys all agree that there are no short cuts that give you consistent reliable bug hole results. So, you have to work up a load for each bullet for powder weight and seating. You may know this but I repeat it only because I wanted to find the quick way to do it and am convinced it don’t exist. o_O

The good thing is that as I work on load development, I learn more and more. And, there are real deal shooters on this sight that will help guide you through the maze—-for free. :)

The more I work on it, the more I want to do. And there is no substitute for the knowledge and understanding you gain from seeing it come together from your work and efforts.

I like using the “Boyer” method charting seating depth and powder charge at the same time. Here is a thread where I was directed through development of a load using that method.

Straight shooting.

Here is my new 6BR.

Savage F-Class production gun
Bartlien 4 groove 29”

First firing on new Lapua brass with a trim/chamfer and neck turn.

First 6BR loads I have ever made.

A little cross wind, hurts the groups, but I am happy so far.
