6BR Group size

I'm using Berger 105 VLD and H4895 (1:8 twist barrel) What group size can I expect at 100, 200 and 300 yds? Would a different bullet work better at these distances? Thanks Ed

Edward: As dmoran said, and you will have to do testing with various bullets in YOUR barrel. They are all different.

My 8 twist 6BR chamberings prefer the plain vanilla 105 Bergers, #24428. Others report the most success with the VLD's, and others with the Hybrids.

Buy a box of 100 of each, load them identically, and compare the results.

Ed,,,I think the most important factor is seating depth,,,you can change the charge wt. by a LOT and not see much change,,,but the diff. between jam and jumping is significant!!!,,,,as to group sizes when you got it dialed in ,,,,typical at 100yds--1/4"---200 yds 1/2" ---300 yds 3/4"....you will get some better and several worse, the big factor there is WIND,,,shoot in it,,,dont try to avoid it ,,,practice in it,,,if so when you attend a shooting match and the wind is blowing (and it ALWAYS is)you will be ready,,,,Roger

The quality of the rifle and barrel will be a big factor. If it is a custom or even a Cooper, .25 is realistic at 100 yards. If it is something else or poorly built, 1/2 inch or more might be the reality, although I think a gunsmith would have to try to get a 6BR to shoot less than 1/2 inch.

Myself, I have never been able to have a perfect 2x and 3x increase in group size at 200 and 300 yards. Not sure if it is air movement or what, but at 200 yards group size increases by a factor of about 2.25x and at 300 yards by a factor of 3.5x.

+1 expiper is exactly correct..... as is fdshuster. WD

Maybe... but you need to be able to tell the difference. Without a controlled environment to shoot in how are you going to evaluate the performance of other high quality bullets? That said I shoot the 105 VLD's and they are very good. I hear the Hy Brids are popular and the 108's are less popular but good too. I think they all are good enough to stick with, just pick one and go with 500 then try something else the next 500.

Not sure about your rest setup and all that but a properly built 6br should be able to shoot under 2" groups at 600 yards. Of course this is dependent on shooter, loads, conditions etc. I always test my guns the first or last hour or two of daylight. No mirage and very little wind. My last 6br barrel I put on my gun I shot five 5 shot groups at 600, biggest was 1.8 inches. I started the 5 shot groups with 7 rounds down the barrel. I was using 30.3 gr of varget, cci 450 and 107's. I haven't shot the sierras in a few years now since the 105 hybrids came out. I have had great luck with the hybrids with my 6BRX. Good luck and have fun shooting.

I am new at the 600 yard game and am taking advise as I go and learn for myself. I was told and do tune my 600 yard rifle at 300 yards, expecting it to shoot around a 5/8" or better 3 shot groups (to save bullets powder ect) to be competitive at 600. Do be prepared to switch powder, bullet, seating depth, ect to get it where it needs to be.
