6BR-DX or 6Dasher

I am interested in building up a 6BR or 6BR Imporved rifle, and have a couple of questions.

I want a no neckturn chamber .272 or so, but would prefer to go with a BRDX or a Dasher to the base BR.

1st - Is it possible to fireform a BRDX case without neck turning? Just jam into the lands and fire a standard case?

2nd - I assume I would need to order a finishing reamer as well as a resizing reamer for the DX to have a f/l sizing die made. It looks like then a standard Redding Comp seating die would work, if the smith ran the resizing reamer into it as well?

3rd - How adversly is barrel life shortened by going with the improved case vs. the base?

Thanks in advance.

Look at the John708 post. He is shooting a 6BRX no neck turn just as your talking about. He is using a standard 6BR die backed out for the additional length of the BRX. I bored out a second sizing die and made him a body sizing die. I head spaced his rifle with only .001 headspacing. His cases are hardly stretching any at all. He is shooting a 31.750" Broughton 5C 1:8 twist. He is consistantly shooting .41 and less ten shot groups. His velocity has been 3020 and 3150 fps. The hotter loads are showing some presure signs in the form of ejector marks.

I have two 6BRX rifles and would advise going this way. All you have to do to fire form the cases is to expand them to 7mm, then size them to 6mm about half way down the neck, so that the bolt just closes. I also jam the bullet with an almost max charge of Varget and you can compete with this fireforming load so there is no waste in fireforming. I hold our club record at 600 with a 200 19X shooting Sierra match king bullets. Easiest wildcat to form and load for I have ever seen. 6BRX is also good at 1000 with the usual caveat, big bullets buck the wind better but, with the 6BRX you have no recoil and barrel life, I believe will be in the thousands. I too am shooting a Broughton barrel.

Hi i have the Dasher and believe it is a better option than the BRX for one reason only and that is because Redding and Forster both make dies for it and do not make them for the BRX off the shelf. Balisticaly they are almost identical. We are chambering the Dasher with a 271 neck and are using Lapua cases. In the end it is up to you but the Dasher Route is easier in the way of dies. If you go with a BRX the Br seating die works fine but the BR full length die will not size the bottom 100 thou at the web of the case and when you require sizing the base is where it is usualy required.

Any way any way you go with a BR BRX or Dasher they are all very accurate.

Barrel-lie is shorter as more powder is burned... but how much is not certain. I don't think there is a 10% difference and it also depends on maintenance and the lucky-factor with any barrel.

If you go the BRX route, and have a .308 full length sizing die, then you can take the stem out of the .308 and run the BRX case up into the die. It will size the bottom .100 of the brass. A regular Redding bushing die in 6BR will work for the BRX. Also a regular 6BR body die will work to set the shoulder back the needed .001 to .002.
I have 3 BRX's and use regular 6BR dies and a .308 full length die. These seems to work well for me.
Good luck and good shooting.

With the 6BRX, I also use regular Redding 6BR "S" type neck bushing dies and a body die as needed so getting dies is no problem. Regular 6BR dies will work just fine.
