6br deer bullet options

6mm bullets you can't go wrong with that Ive used on deer, antelope, coyote.
80g speers, 85g sierra jhpbt, 90 & 95g nosler bt, 90g sierra tgk. All those outright do the job from 2600 to 3100 fps.

So I've got a 8 twist 6br that id like to hunt with this year. It's a 22" barrel. All shots are 300 and in. I was thinking about the sierra 85bthp or a sierra 85 spt varminter.

However, I read on a different forum that some thought the 85bthp was too tough a bullet for the slower speed of the 6br?

Questions. Would you disagree with the bullet choices, and if so what would you use?

Thanks fellas
105 hybrids. Don't go with varmint rounds. too much meat damage.

There’s no way in HELL I’m shooting a 6mm bullet that gives me an exit. Such a waste of energy.

I suggested the 108 elite for this gentleman for the added energy, but it has a tissue paper thin jacket and shouldn’t exit. The 87 VLD won’t exit either.

I’ve been shooting 68 Bart’s on deer for 8 years and love them, never had an exit and never had a deer go more than 15 yards. I’ve shot a few 80s as well.

Life’s too short to shoot crappy bullets.

I don't run anything in 6mm/.243, but if I did, I'd probably try the 85gr T-Rex from Maker bullets, or the 92gr MKZ from Cavity Back. I use the 105 MKZ in my 24" Grendel upper, and it has proven to be extremely effective on white tail here in Indiana. I was originally concerned that 105gr might be a little light and struggle with penetration, but that hasn't been the case. They've been super accurate for me, penetrate really deep, and also give great expansion.

My choice would be the 95 grain TMKs from Sierra or the 103 ELDX or 108 ELDM from Hornady.

As for worrying about velocities, for 300 yards and in, your impact velocities will be well over 1800 fps, which means you will have good bullet performance with anything other than monometal bullets.

This was my initial thought, but I figured the velocity would be horrible.
For your consideration.

My first deer with the 6mm ARC was likely the largest midwest whitetail I have taken in a little over 40 years of hunting. ( in excess of 250 lbs live weight) That deer was taken with a 254 yard, high shoulder shot using a 108 grain elite Hunter @ 2780 at the muzzle. Instantaneous collapse & lights out at impact. That load was group.ng .7 MOA from a 22" light contour barrel on a CZ 527 action.

Since then I have went to all copper offerings. Was very happy with 87 grain Absolute hammer & 90 grain CX terminal effect on mid west white tail does the past 2 seasons.

That's good to hear, and congrats! Hopefully I can report back with the same effect of that bullet on a big boy!

Probably worth mentioning, regarding the 108 gr Elite hunter. The wound cavity on that deer was rather small going in & going out. That bullet just caught the lower portion of the spine. Not so sure I would have had optimal expansion on a heart (lung shot) w the velocity I had to work with. I opted for the high shoulder with that fear in mind.

Sierra 85g HPBT, and Speer 85g BTSP, two bullets that are hard to beat in 6mm/.243" cartridges. Old school tech but still getting the job done. I shoot the Sierra 85g bullets in my 6mm-250 at 3100 fps, I have not yet been able to bump one into a deer. You should be able to get them to 2900-3000 fps in a 6br easily.
