6br for pronghorn

I want to hunt Pronghorn antelope with a 6br am I crazy or unrealistic? 85 gr. Barnes or Sierra bullet would be used.

Crazy, why in the world would you think that? Instead of an 85 grain bullet I would use a good 95-100 grain boat tail, like a Sierra, Nosler, Hornady, whatever with a high BC. Not a partition, it is not needed on antelope. Antelope are fairly easy to bring down with a good shot and do not require the bullet energy a white tail deer needs for instance. Not that the 6BR wouldn't also make an good deer cartridge out to 300 yards if shots were taken with care.
If you put a 100 guys in the field with a 6BR and another 100 with a 7mm Rem magnum, and gave each of them just 1 cartridge, I would be willing to bet that the 6 BR would beat the 7mm mag by a large margin for the simple fact that the guys with the 6BR wouldn't be intimidated by the recoil and would place that 1st shot where it should be.
Also keep in mind that a shot in the leg for example from either rifle is a wound that will not put him down by either caliber, so if I am getting through to the Grey matter between everyone's shoulders, PRACTICE with whatever rifle you will be using!
Before anyone screams, It would be wrong to give a hunter only 1 cartridge so he couldn't follow up on possible wounded animals!

Out of curiosity - what fer rifle you putting that barrel on? If its a single shot, you are OK. If its a repeater, you will have trouble feeding 6BR cartridges thru the box, and it will have to be altered. This can be very tricky. I am having a 30BR built for score competition, and already have a Rem 700 varmint stock, and BDL floorplate/magazine ready to go. I hope to switch from my 3" foreend stock, and put the varmint stock on to hunt with it. Need to discuss with my gunsmith, but I know feeding may be a biggie problem. You might do the same, if you have not yet considered this, and you want a repeater.

JW,

Take a look at:

You should also read the article by Mike Bryant on Rem 700 mag conversions: http://www.6mmbr.com/Rem700magfix.html

BTW, Brownell's just knocked the price of their Rem 700 actions down to $241.
