6BR Dasher or 6XC for long range

Looking to upgrade from .308 for F Class type shooting mostly 600 yards but maybe some 1K in future. I was thinking of 284 win at first but I am concerned about the recoil. I am thinking I may do better with something that has less recoil than the 308 that will be easier to shoot freeish recoil ( I know! free recoil is not allowed in F Class). Any thoughts on the choices between 6XC and 6BR Dasher?

Probably looking at a Borden action, Bartlien 1:8 30" barrel in an Elesio tube gun stock.

I shoot .284 Shehane in my Long Range rifle and decided on 6mm SLR for a new Mid Range gun. My 6BR Viper is deadly accurate but suffers in the San Diego and Phoenix winds, even at 600 yards. The 6mm SLR is formed by pushing the .243 shoulder from 20° to 30°, which lengthens the neck and slightly reduces the powder capacity. It has a little more capacity than the 6XC. For one thing the P.O Ackley has a 40 degree shoulder. I really like the Dasher but for your app I think the 6xc may be the better choice.

Thanks, Wayne. And I agree and really like my 6XC. I want to stay at three rifles to carry in my motorhome, but if I should ever sell my 243 WSSM Match, I might consider replacing it with a 6mmSLR.
Is the neck length of the AI the same as the standard 243?

The neck length is the same. The .243 is fired in an Ackley chamber and the shoulder is blown out to 40°. The SLR die pushes the shoulder down around the neck, creating a 30° shoulder and slightly reducing the powder capacity.

Bill, if I were to shoot a 6mm at 1000, yes. The barrel life should be better for a moderate performance hit. If your range conditions are not bad, it could be a good way to go. Our winds favor the larger, higher B.C. 7mm and caliber .30 bullets. I shot my 6BR one morning at 1000, first relay, and scored a 198-9X. Then, the wind appeared and no more 198s that day.

Steve, I understand what you are saying. The only competing I do is an informal steel comp with steel targets out to 1000 yards - and I have a 284 Win shooting 180 Hybrids for that.
Living in a motorhome doesn't lend itself to owning a lot of rifles, so I have chosen three to keep. I re-barreled a 22-250 to the 6mmXC. It and my 243 WSSM Match are my designated long range varmint rifles. However, either 6mm could be pressed into service on the steel comp if the 284 Win wasn't available for some reason.

No question that either of the larger 6mms you're considering will give you more margin of error in wind doping, but I still believe the Dasher gives you an edge in accuracy. I've shot a couple of my Dashers in 1000yd. any/any prone matches at Byers, Co. (CRC), and Raton, and in the Co. State 1000yd BR Champs a few years ago.

Never felt under-gunned, but that was before I'd built my 1st 6x47 Lapua, and started shooting DTAC 115s. Now, if I had to make the choice again, and knowing then what I know now, I'd probably go with a 6x47, and that'd be my choice over the 6XC.

How does the case capacity of the 6x47 Lapua compare with the 6XC.

If they are really close, I would have to tell you that to shoot the 115s, a bigger case like the 243 SLR is really a bit better choice.

I have not seen an XC rifle yet that can propel the 115 over 3000 fps at pressures that won't destroy the brass in short order.

The 243SLR, 6MM CM, even a straight 243 have the extra capacity to shoot the big bullets faster and at lower pressures. My 243 SLR shoots the 115 DTACS a bit over 3000 fps and is very accurate. Pressures are moderate and brass lasts a long time.

With the big 6mm bullets just a tad over 3000 fps, you are shooting right with the 6.5x284s at any distance.

Right now, I have 1700 rds on my Bartline 5r, 7.5 twist bbl. My loads have concentrated on the 115 DTAC bullet. Tested a few 105 Hybrids at 3150 fps and didn't see results that will make me give up the DTACs. Will try the Hybrids again and see what sort of groups and chrono numbers they produce.

This is strictly a 1000 yd rifle and I was hoping the Hybrids would bring something to the table that would be worthwhile.

I am interested in shooting the 6slr using the 105 Hybrid out to 1000.

I've shot the 105 Hybrid at 1000 over 3300 fps in 6mm Remington. It does not handle the wind as well as 180 Hybrids at 2950 from my Shehane. If you have light winds, there may be an accuracy and handling advantage with the SLR. When mine is together, I will certainly try it at 1000, at least once.

is the 6 x 47 Lapua the same as the 6 x 47 6mmHot that is listed in the Quick Load? the case capacity is in QL is 47g of H20.

if so it looks like the Berger 105's can be sent at about 3250ft/sec with a 30" barrel.

What freebore is needed for the 105's and the 115 DTAC's

Thanks Steve - Yeah the top guys are all pretty much on 7s, with the odd exception. Even at the shorts the 7s are so accurate now, the 6s are working hard whereas the 7s hardly work up a sweat. This range has a bad rep for wind and a slow marker is often the death of a 6, however there are still a couple of guys Nationally that use 6s, and 6.5s that will clean the 7s up. I am definitely keen to see how you get on...maybe PM when you have had a match or two with it.

I shot my BRX in Memphis, picked up the Bronze medal in the sling division.

The SLR , in my opinion, is not as kind to bbls as the BR based cartridges. With that said, I shoot the SLR mainly in 1K matches or occasionally at 600 yds.

Memphis was a 300,500,600 yd match. It is pretty hard to compete with a BR at those ranges. I'll save the SLR for Oak Ridge.
