Thanks Toby. I will test jammed and work out to .010 where I started.

I stopped at 31.8 because of the recommended load here: http://www.6mmbr.com/6mmbr.html.

I am seeing no pressure signs so I will step up in two grain increments to see where the limits are.

I have thoroughly cleaned the barrel since shooting these groups so I will have to figure out what extent cleaning will have on the groups to follow.

I had some time to put some of the advice to paper.

First, out of curiosity and because some thought I may be missing something by not trying jam to touching the lands, I tried .005 jammed and touching the lands (0.00). Neither of these seatings shot as good as .025 jump.


Next, I figured I would try stepping the charge up .025 jump in .001 increments from 31.0-31.7 since 31.2 and 31.8 seemed to shoot best. I did not reshoot 31.2 and 31.8 but they are included in the photo.


This seems to indicate that.025 jump is pretty consistent from 31.2-31.5. Don’t know if this is a large enough window but seems decent to me.

Next, unless I get some different directions from you guys, I will adjust the seating depth from .023-.027 in .001 increments and see what happens.

I cleaned the barrel thoroughly a few days ago.

Had a little spare time today so I decided to tune for seating depth using 31.4gr. I loaded 3 rounds at .023, .024, .026, and .027. I had a little bit of daylight left after shooting the last set so I rushed and loaded 3 more rounds at .027. Es fornthatb”rushes” loaded group was 97. One of the primers seated hard but that don’t explain the crazy numbers.

I don’t see very much difference in the groups. Not sure what to try next. Open for suggestions. Would like to get rid of the consistent vertical.

That vertical could be your rest setup. Even the type of sand in your ears can cause vertical along with a dragging trigger sear bar. With the load changes not changing the vertical id be willing to bet its rest related and just for conversation purposes id bet you are using heavy sand.

I have been watching your progress.

I had better luck with H4895 with a cci BR-4 Primer, got rid of the vertical in my groups when I had previously been using varget.

What is a dragging sear?

A dragging sear is a bad part in your trigger. And a hard bag will cause it faster. Try a softer bag with regular sand in it. Heavy sand is notorious for causing vertical when you get down to that small of vertical. The dragging sear is just an example of how even the smallest things will not let your little vertical go away.

Me and everyone I know (lrbr) use heavy sand in the bottom with regular sand in the ears. Never heavy sand in ears or front bag.

Heavy sand is that black zircon sand. Decent size bag with it in there will give you a hernia.
